Default A neat little rifle, I think you値l get a kick out of

This is my Custom H&R Ultra Wildcat in 17 Remington. Sako L461 action.

He’s a tiny little fella that only weighs about five lbs. The stock is an MPI. The barrel is a Douglas Ultra Rifled produced for H&R that I bought three of.

I’ve had it since about 1992 and use it for predator calling or late in the season will sit up on talus slopes and pick off a few chucks here and there. If I am going to go for a stroll it is also a favorite.

I shoot Remington and Hornady 25 grain HP bullets out of it, 25 grain V-max bullets hit the target sideways, if they hit it at all. I’ve never tried any other bullets, I’m getting north of 4,000 fps and half inch accuracy. I’m not inclined to shoot prairie dogs or set up to shoot a chuck colony with this rifle because it is too easy to burn up a barrel and I only have one more after this one goes to pot.

The scope on it right now is a 3-9 Nitrex TR1 and has sub cross hairs in it. If I am going for a stroll and want to take about half the weight of the scope off I swap the scope out for a Leupold 2-7 Compact that I had Leupold add a Target Elevation Turret to. I have a few of those 2-7s that are set up that way and like them quite well.

Question About the H&R barrels........

Is the cartridge designation stamped across the chamber top......or along the left side of the chamber?

Thanks,
Kevin

JDHAsty, very nice rifle. My 17 Rem looks like a H&R UltraWildcat, but is not one. It has the L461 repeater action, Fajen stock, and a 24in Shilen 1:10 barrel. It likes the 25gr HP better than the 25VMAX also, although the 25gr VMAX will still group around 3/4" for 5 at 100yds.

I have a buddy who saw a Marlin 322 in a LGS a couple days ago for $700. I might go take a look at it and end up with another L461 action rifle. He said it is 223, but I suspect it is a 222.

My L461 is in .222 with a varmint barrel. It still baffle's me why barrel makers keep pushing 1-10 barrels for a .17

I agree also. Also have a Sako A1 in 223 Rem, and it is one of my favorite walking rifle.
