Sako 222 Rem
I am looking for a rifle in 222 Rem and have come across some Sako A1 and Vixen rfles. Having no experience with either, I thought I would ask here. Looking for experiences and advice.
Thank you. |

Probably my favorite sporter varmint rifle. They’re light and quick handling. They’re getting older now though so a good one is a bit more difficult to find these days. I picked up a 223 on the cheap at Cabelas of all places. The barrel was gone and the headspace was way off. Not sure what happened to it but it received a new barrel shortly afterwards. It’s just a fun rifle to shoot. I like the fact that there’s no plastic in them. The 461 is more of a hand built rifle while the A1 is more of a mass produced one. The finish doesn’t seem to be quite as nice as the 461. I have a 6 ppc as well that is an absolute tack driver. Prices seem to be around $1200 for a good example in 222/223 these days. I’m sure you will enjoy one.

Found a pencil barrel Safari grade Deuce almost twenty years ago in a little out the way pawn shop. $500 or 600. Guy even loaned me a worn case which I returned later.
Just load it to factory specs. |

The A1 and 461 are great rifles.

i have had both and can't tell the difference between them. the A1 is the l461 with a bolt shroud change.

best their is.
interesting fact, with the discontinuation of the CZ 527 they're more than what you can pic up a L461/A1 for.

I don't own a CZ, but I know, I would not trade my L461 varmint .222 for a CZ.

It is hard to beat a vintage Sako L461... lights, sexy, pleasure to carry and shoot.
My CZ is close, but without the glamour. It gets picked for practical field work. The AR15 gets the call for mud, rain, and situations with high risk of abuse. Last edited by Oso Polaris; 11-18-2022 at 07:07 PM. |

I have an older A1 varmint in .222, 24" bl. I tried the old 19.5gr. H4198 with 52gr. Sierra match bullets and it pumped out 5 shot group after 5 shot group running .250" and less shot at 100 meters (109yds).
It does the same with 40gr. Barnes VLC's and 24.5gr. AA2230. I've a bunch of those bullets still. For gophers only. Currently have a 4200 Elite 8-32, but will be trading it out for a Vector 6-24 with stadia wire Christmas tree reticle.
