For me in the more populated areas here in Maryland land of the 'Anti-Hunters' I like my CZ527 17AH shooting the 25 grain V-Max. The 25 grain V-Max for me offers better penetration than the 20's which sometimes fragment too soon especially if you hit bone other than head shots. I also like the fact that if will feed from the magazine. My second favorite round is the 17RFB also shooting the 25 grain V-Max. It is a custom single shot rifle which means I have to be fast when chambering a round when a groundhog appears. The 17RFB is an amazing round that easily put the hogs to sleep at well past 300 yards. My all around cartridge chioce would be the Ruger 204 if the proximity of people wasn't an issue and the report of the rifle. The 204 is a top performer for the ability to shoot the groundhogs about as far as I could shoot using my Stoney Point shooting sticks. Finally when I travel to Ohio to shoot groundhogs shooting from a more fixed position you can't beat the accuracy of either my 22 or 6BR both are excellent performers out to 500 to 600 yards without a lot of powder or recoil. Default Groundhog gun

HILLBILLY SNIPER
Now I want you to know I am a low tech shooter, but I have a love affair with shooting (( GROUND HOGS )) since I was a kid. Used 22lr or my granpaws 25-20 as a kid in OK. But got a 218 BEE model 43 WIN in 1963 and I thought I died and went to heaven and sorta of loaned a 22 HORNET a few years later by an old man that couldn`t shoot any more, but when he died sudonly His family took the rifles he loaned me back. I have shot GROUND HOGS is OK, MO, KS. and KY. And my first choice is the 218 BEE or 22 HORNET I never had a whole lot of shots beond 200yds. Beyond 200yds my CZ 17 REM gets taken out of the case. I use a 43 WIN 218 BEE, CZ 527 22 HORNET, and a CZ 527 17 REM. I don`t see as many ground hogs as I use to I have been told the Coyotes have really thined them out. Even around FT KNOX I have been told there are very few. Good Luck To You. ken

I use to favor the 220 Swift with 55gn soft points kinda big I know but Last year my favorite was the 14 AH shooting 15gn bullets, I have a feeling the 17 Mink is going to be my favorite this year shooting 20gn T000. I am starting to liking the smaller stuff

.17 Mach II for the residential areas, .17 Ackley Hornet or Fireball for the Commercial and Less dense residential areas(read know those living close ), and a 14tw .243AI with 66 gr. Berger FBHBC's at 3950 fps for our cabin in SC PA. God I love shooting those burrowing buggers! We ate them as kids and I told my Dad that when I got a job I was never eating another!
