Default short vs long

I have noticed that some of the wildcat cartridges are almost identical except for the length of the neck. Example, 17 Mach IV vs the 17 tsunami or the 17 viper vs 17 spartan etc. What are the advantages or disadvantages of different neck lengths Thanks. Dan

Longer necks can accommodate a larger range of bullet weights (lengths) that can still reach the rifling.

A longer neck does allow more bullet options without running into seating depth issues. It May lessen throat erosion depending on if you believe the turbulence theory. I am not sure one way or the other because all of the cartridges I have had with the longer neck were smaller capacity cartridges anyway.
