You guys up North West
Are you ready?
Just read where you'll be getting up to three feet of that lovely white stuff in the next day or two. Dougie?? Plow handy yet? It's time! Won't be long down here either. I'm ready.

I'll be out to CO/WY with the family Oct 5-12. I have no idea how to pack. Long range forecast says 70's-80's but I know getting up in the higher country of CO will require warmer clothes. Wasn't figuring on snow but dang... We got snow 10yrs ago on this trip over my birthday. I guess any time after July 4th it can happen. Going to try to fill a few antelope doe tags early in the week up north of Casper.

Anytime you are in the intermountain west it is a good idea to have some winter gear with you. Year round I keep at a minimum a jacket, a pair of gloves and a pull-over cap and a bit of food in very vehicle, and even more cold weather gear in the winter.
Here is an example - https://www.kxnet.com/news/flashback...n-montana/amp/ Aug 22, 1992 Great Falls, Montana 8.3 inches of snow I knew some folks from Florida who were visiting when that happened, all they had with them was summer weight clothing and if I hadn't suppliled them some winter clothes I think they would have frozen. I don't think that they will ever go back to Montana again. drover Last edited by drover; 09-26-2019 at 04:22 PM. |

Forecast is only ten inches around here over the weekend so that will melt off pretty quick, I hope. Problem we had last year is the snow came early Oct and just never left till end of May. That made for a long winter.

You never know. I was at Grand Teton one year in the mid 80's and it snowed on Aug 29th that year. Most of the hotel help had already left for the summer, and the Conference Center/Lodge was only going to be open for a few more days.

I grew up in the NE part of Wyoming, and one summer on the 4th of July, my family was camping/fishing at Deerfield Lake in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
It was a cold and damp weekend trip, and on the 4th about lunch time, the slow light drizzling rain turned to big snow flakes for about an hour; enough for the ground to get white. When the rain returned, the snow was gone in a few minutes. The highlight of the weekend was the fact that the fishing was great. -BCB

You guys may not believe this but I have on a couple occasions, over the years, seen snow (even if light) every month of the year in my section of the state. N.E. corner of Commie California. Bill K

Right on Bill K:
Charlie: Bring both summer and winter clothing, and tire chains. You just might need them all, or may not. CO now has chain law on the passes. Required! IF you skip putting them on and spin out and tie up traffic the fine will more than pay for a set of chains. They're good insurance even in 4x4's. I spent 5 summers on a high valley hay crew in Jr and High school. There was around 50-60 of us at various ranches. We gathered for a bbq on the 4th. I think it was either 1960 or 61. Weather was beautiful in the morning. During lunch the wind started kicking up. By 3 the sleet was flying by on the level. By dark we had 5" of snow. Strange doings for some reason we hadn't mowed the lower meadow yet. Good thing. Bad weather lasted til into Sept when us kids had to leave for school. That fall during elk season it was warm n sunny: Oct & Nov. We hunted mornings, hayed during the day and hunted evenings until we got it all up. The winter wasn't too severe either. On the 4th, bbq was cancelled out. At supper three old time ranchers figured out what years it had snowed sometime during every month of the year. Valley ran from about 8000' up to 9500' where I bunked. I felt that was the ugliest stack I'd put up, back end got wet enough a ledge slipped off. Orin said: "with this weather change that's one of the prettiest hay stacks he'd ever seen --it's up and capped". All loose grass hay. Here's another thing he said: "people claim only fools and newcomers predict CO weather. I've figured it out where I can predict it every time and be 100% correct" "It's either going to clear up, or clear up to your a--/ belt buckle" He claimed he'd seen it do both many times on his place.
