George someone (bowfinger) I think sent me a 17vha case and I compared it to the the 17x28 you have and your case is slightly larger in capacity.

Don't have a 17 VHA any longer George. But you could also google up dimensions of the two cartridges and compare measurement. The 17 VHA is a necked down 4.6x30 H&K case. Bill K

Bob:
After Cooper "Fixed" this rifle and didn't use the cases I
made up for them to reset the barrel nothing fit.
I had KW rechamber both rifles to fit exactly the same.
So my version of the case no longer matters now. As
they're the same. Whether they'd match yours or others
I have no idea.

After blowing the NEF up that time I've backed down to 9.5gr AA1680.
That's plenty and gives a bit of slack.
I'd bought a jug of this powder on my trip to your place. Oct '18 Jack
brought me another can full. I'd bet there's around 14-15 lbs of 1680
in there. I've wondered if that would be enough to burn the barrels out
with. would be fun trying.

Bill: IF that's the only difference it wouldn't matter as I neck 'em down
to .17 anyway. I have a couple thousand of those cases not touched.
And likely 4-5000 of the 5.7's, many are resized and never loaded.
I do have a 30 cal ammo can of loaded shells for it though.

Have you ever seen such a can full of tiny shells? There's a hell of a lot
of 'em in there, take that from me. HA!

Worst thing is, I haven't fired more than ten in the past ten years.
Too much "life" getting in the way.

Default get some trigger time

17vha, George, you gotta get out and use that 17VHA more, it is the cats whiskers when pushing any old 20gr to 25gr in a 9" tw. You are correct, don't push it. A case full of h4198 under a 17gr is a very soft load, it is basically like following the same old rule for loading the 17 Ack Hornet using H4198 and a 25 gr bullet. Stuff it full scrape off the excess of H4198 and seat a 25gr in the 17HH or 17Ack Horn, and you have a easy to assemble and accurate load.

Using Trailboss would be a great idea fll and load a bullet that simple, never would it get overpowered with Trailboss. It is a great low energy powder. I wish I had some. I am still working through my first 1lb of HS 700-X and have a long way to go.

I don't have a VHA both mine are .17VR's.

A cooper I got from foxhunter and the NEF I built up before
getting it.

I use AA1680 for them, 9.5gr and 20gr V'max.

I'd never ever fill a case and strike it off for a load.
Especially those tiny cases.

I learned that lesson in the NEF: blew it up with 10.2gr H110 i think it was.
AND it was quite a bit less than full.

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on that new Ruger 5.7 Ray H mentioned on the first page. Prior to that I was thinking about the 5.7 excell arms makes but it’s pretty big a clunky.

I really enjoy shooting my RIA TCM a lot... not sure why I think I need the 5.7.

Ruger seems to have stepped up to make this 5.7 using unconventional or ease new technology ideas.

Nice computer renderings of the cartridges, Rarebear.

Years ago when I was a young Sauberite and I bought my first 20 Tactical in 1999-2000, there used to be a guy from the Houston area who was a Saubier regular who did the same auto cad, or whatever, computer renderings for the then available small caliber cartridges to allow someone to be able to see and compare.

Mike and his wife got heavily into bow hunting and he simply faded into compute oblivion........ Mike J. was/is a great guy......

I got away from the 17 VHA mostly because of the chambering problems. Too much fiddling and not enough shooting.
Got hooked on the 20 TCM. MUCH BETTER factory brass from the start. Just a matter of necking down to 22 TCM case to 20, loading it up and heading to the range.
I have NO EXPECTATIONS as to how it will work BUT, I made it so that makes me the WINNER!!
Custom cut reamer, custom made dies, and a couple of barrels chambered and ready to go. Next in line is shooting time.
I did loan the reamer out to one of the guys that cut a couple of chambers.
I "guess" he was/is happy with his project.
I figured a nice 20 caliber VLD bullet would be better than the little stubby 22s and looked better too.
I single feed so no OAL issues or loading from a mag.
"from the rifle, the .22 TCM makes tremendous gains in velocity; in fact, it averaged 2752 f.p.s. for 10 consecutive shots".
I think I could deal with that. A little bitty bug hole maker.
Guilty on the borrowing the reamer and not reporting results. I did use the 20 TCM on squirrels last July , had 130 rounds I managed to get loaded with 24 NTX bullets going just over 3100 FPS. It was not super explosive with the NTX, but left a nice quarter sized hole through the squirrels, and in a 8 lb rifle was about like shooting a 22 :-). I did not do a great deal of load development before going. It seems like a solid 200+ Yard round, and was built on a wasatch single shot action. I looked very carefully at using a CZ 527, but the cartridge is just a bit too short to use a magazine even heavily modified. As a single shot it would work well. The factory brass was ok, but just ok, I ended up needing to skim turn to avoid too tight necks on some rounds. Life is a bit chaotic at the moment, when I get the opportunity to work with it more I will post.
