Default Rem 700 extractor issues

I recently had a Rem 700 rebarreled and accurized. Now I cannot get the rifle to extract. Gunsmith says this is normal after this work. Anyone have this issue? Worth changing to a Sako extractor?

Nope. It’s been rechambered for the same caliber. 17 FB.

Time to find a different gunsmith! If it worked before, it should work now.

Can you give more details? I suspect there is a large gap between the root of the bolt handle and the receiver. There should be a cam surface there. I've seen gun store new r700's that basically have zero extraction cam. Accurizing one usually entails taking a light cut on the bolt lugs and the lug abutments in the receiver, which reduces this cam action further. The easiest solution is usually to TIG weld a blob on the bolt handle and carefully grind it back down to match the ramp on the rear of the receiver.

If it was a 17FB before and the smith re-barreled/re-chamber to the same caliber. He must have messed up the extractor somehow doing the work. Damage to extractor lip or such. Bill K

I have ran into this twice after having a 700 223 rebarreled (back to 223 again), in both instances I replaced the extractor and the issue was solved. Extractors are cheap and take about 10 minutes to replace.

I think what happens is that the extractor takes a "set", and also become worn from being in the same position for thousands of rounds. A new barrel is intalled and the headspace is different by a few thousandths which positions the cartridge in a slightly different location and the extractor can no longer grasp it adequately.

I agree with flyrod. The bolt needs to be re-timed. It probably didin't have much to begin with, a common malady with Remington bolt action centerfires. I'd send it to another smith who can do the work. For more peace of mind, have him replace the extractor at the same time.
Edit, I've had five different barrels on two different .17 Fireballs, thousands of rounds and never had an extractor issue and they are still the originals.

Have you checked to see if the bolt serial and rifle serial #'s match?
I've mixed them up when cleaning multiple guns. It could easily happen with a busy 'smith, too.

I know of no gunsmiths that would be that careless, They usually keep each weapon they are working on, parts and all, very well organized and together. Bill K
