Default Small cased .172" best primers

What is the most consistent and least vigorous small pistol or rifle primer available for .17Squirrel through .17HH? Gary Wenzel, I expect has some answers.

The Rem BR are often hailed, however I prefer the CCI BR4 for my little ones. I use them for all the .10's, .12's and .14's. The main thing being that the lot-to-lot consistency is very very good.

When you get to 17 HH you are past where small pistol primers work. 17 HH is a very high pressure loading and you need the thicker small rifle primers. I too like the CCI 400 and match primers for the 17HH and use Federal SP for the low pressure loads in the 22 H 22 BEE etc.

The CCI BR4 is much thicker material than the CCI 400's are. For me the CCI450's and CCI BR4's shoot the same in both my 17-204 and the 17 Remington. Remington 7 1/2's are much softer than either of the CCI products. If cost does not matter go with the BR4's. Larry

Wolf or Tula for a whole lot less money if you can find them now.

Hopefully Ray H will chime in. I think he just shot up a couple tons worth of squirrel ammo earlier this spring lol he'd have good real life info.

As well as Ron and these other fine fellows.

As for as me, I'd have to get my old PC running and look it up for sure but I'm thinking in the 17 squirrel I used Rem 6-1/2 and WSR primers. I know that I did try WSPM primers but I don't think it worked out so well.

I have never used the heavier cupped primers in anything but places I needed them to either stop primer flow into an oversized firing pin hole and/or prevent piercing primers. I mean they are great primers but if I have always preferred to use the softest cup possible to better see pressure signs (like out PDn) plus not only have the good ole WSR primers seemed to work well in most Guns they have been some of the best $priced$ for me. (I might be trying to fool myself in that line of thinking? But it has worked out well for me)

In anything smaller then the squirrel I almost exclusively use pistol primers of one type or the other.

I use either BR4 or Fed 205, no preference, its just a matter of what my importer has when I want 1000. Both work well in everything I load but 205s do show pressure a bit earlier.

I have been using winchester small pistol primers for years with great success in my 17 ackley hornet. The case is too small for rifle primers in my opinion. My goto load is 12.5 grn of aa 1680 with 20 grn vmax. It will shoot 1/4-3/8" 5 shot groups all day long out of my matchgrade contender barrel

I did some work on this topic with my 17 HH... in such a tiny high pressure case the primer does make quite a difference!

Had a couple of pierced Small Rifle primers... I know some people like to use Small Pistol primers in the 22 Hornet, but this is a relatively low pressure almost parallel sided case vs the 17 HH or 17 AH.

I wouldn't recommend using Small Pistol primers in the high pressure steep shouldered 17 HH or 17 AH...

I like the RWS 4033 primer, very accurate with N120 loads and gives a 'free' velocity boost so I bought 5,000 of them
