75GR Speer Duty Rifle Gold Dot Soft Point (24475)
Hey all, Happy Holidays, has anyone cross sectioned the Speer .224 75gr gold dot from either loaded ammunition or as a reloading item? I contacted Lewiston ID, and all they would tell me is it is 75gr, and a nominal OAL .926" .
It seemingly performs well out of a 1 in 7" twist down to about 1850fps. They gave a .411 G1 BC, and it looks like it demands a 1 in 7" twist. (EDIT: IT WORKS in a slower twist than 1 in 7, 1 in 9 even, but according to JBM twist calculation it needs a 1 in 8.5" tw & according to some, out to 655yds & it still expanded) My 1 in 12 "tw 16"TC carbine apparently does not understand physics, it stabilizes the 69gr Sierra BTHP just fine at 1600 feet altitude even in winter, probably won't work at sea level though, but it doesn't matter to me. cool didn't know they released the GD's as a component.
Google Molon and gold dot or federal fusion(same style of construction) ETA: dug up some links https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/-/16-694384/&page=1 https://www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Se...Gold%20Dot.htm Last edited by squirrel_slayer; 11-27-2018 at 10:34 PM. |

Thanks, that was 90% of what I was searchig for.
You sir are seriously gifted with the Google-Foo-Man-Chu.
I think that this bullet may be the optimal for tackling larger game with a .223 Rem / 5.56mm AR, or bolt action. After staring at my old TC carbine with its 16.25" .223 Rem barrel in a 1 in 12" twist, I am getting the itch up for loading a better bullet than I have shot in the past. I wish I had a fast twist barrel in which to use this 75gr Gold Dot, the only option I can see that makes sense to me ATM, is for me to make my Rem 700SPS 17FB into a switch barreled dual caliber rifle. I can only see money being thrown out the window as I look at that 75gr bullet. I am curious enough though I might just try these in a handload through my TC barrel. It is not supposed to be capable of stabilizing a 69gr HPBT Sierra, but it does. Those are .900" and 6 grains lighter than the .926" 75gr Speer Gold Dot. If anyone out there has tried these in slower twists than 1 in 7.7" or 1 in 8" then I have a sneaking suspicion that they might just be okay in my "1 in 12" . I am pretty certain the 64gr would fly well, but it has an inferior on target performance when compared with the 75gr Gold Dot. I was really hoping someone had sectioned the 75gr Gold Dot like the 64gr has been here: TMJ version: 75-grain American Eagle Total Metal Jacket in .223, http://="https://www.youtube.com/wat...9bmWmdWE?t=566 As some of you have noted below, the .224 Valkerie has some really nice potential. This makes total sense if using an AR platform, but if you have a barrel throated specifically for the 90gr bullets and you have an AI chamber then you are not gaining anything with regard to accuracy except a shorter fatter cartridge. The max case capacity is within a half of a grain between Valkerie and .223AI. This ends up looking like a comparison between two other cases, the .300WIN MAG, and a .30WSSM. Potatoe- Pahtatta if you ask me. As long as you are looking for a semi auto, then the .224 V MIGHT be preferred, but if you are shooting deer with a .224" bullet, I'm going to stick to something that is proven, i.e., the 75gr Gold Dot that began my discussion. With a throat cut for the 90gr you are not really loosing much if you can single load, or if you are using a bolt action. The throat will be deeper in a .223Rem AI chamber so cut, and so, BANG, there you are, same case capacity, perhaps more or less by a half of a grain. A half of a grain over a .223REM AI chamber is not enough for me to buy a new rifle. The 75gr Gold Dot, or the 75gr TMJ Speer load is going to do very well for normal deer hunting ranges. A new barrel with a faster twist or a new chamber yes, but not a new rifle. This 75gr Gold Dot will do quite well in a .223 Rem. Last edited by 17tbs; 11-28-2018 at 09:48 PM. |

Gold dots
They are also making a 55 and 62g gold dot in 22 caliber.
I shot the 55's in a 22/250, 14T and they shot 3/8". Friends are killing deer with the 55g bullets in 223's. |

I'm thinking a model 7 in 224 valkyrie with a 7 twist would be a hot little kids deer rifle for my granddaughter. And that bullet would be whitetail medicine

The other huge bonus was that it doesn't seem to loose much if any mass while doing its job on deer. Less lead in my deer meat means I can waste less meat. It goes slower than a lighter bullet so that makes sense, but by some hunters accounts outperforms the old reliable 150gr 30-30 Softpoint on deer. Last edited by 17tbs; 11-28-2018 at 01:59 AM. |

I totally agree with you there, it seems to be a perfect match for that application, i wonder if any of us on here have already done this?

Federal was/did? release a similar construction bullet in a 90-100gr weight in the 224V for hunting purposes.
