O.K., thanks BCB! I will do as you suggested and put my finger on the case to stop it from hitting the side of the receiver next time. Hopefully, tomorrow morning. I will report back. Thanks again.

If it shoots OK, I wouldn't worry about it.

Your 22-250 is far better as a repeater than the short BR cases. Kenny

if i remember right thats a plunger eractor. put in a sized case and extract it, examine for flat spot, then pull the plunger and try extracting a case and see if it flattens the mouth.
if the spring is to strong it should send the spent case into the next county.

sicero- I love the 22-250! wouldn't trade it (especially the 788)

Fox hunter- you are right. it is the plunger type and it will fling them far. It may well be the problem as mentioned by others previously due to the shape of the AI case. I will play with it tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies!!

Bado ,hi , this sounds so familiar to me . Im running a 223Ai and had these issues . I sorted the plunger - took off 7 coils from the plunger spring to stop it digging the necks . Its a trued Remy700 !
But there was another issue . On the case mouth there were two shiny spots after firing ! It was almost consistently leaving tiny burrs on the case mouth. It was as if the cases were too long in just two high spots ! I know they were 1750 long and chamber is at least 1760 so no probs there . I took it back and seen it thru a borescope - nothing wrong !
So after 1 year of ok-ish accurate shooting im changing this rifle iv never been able to get it as accurate as id wished . Hence new build .
I hope you sort it bud . atb -tim

gunner,
yep, exactly as you describe with the two shiny spots. only one case had a small burr around the mouth. I am going to go shoot shortly and see what happens. Thanks!

O.K., here's the update.
You guys were right on the money! The extractor is the culprit. As BCB said the shape of the AI case causes the case neck to smack the receiver much harder than the parent case. When I put my finger on the case as soon as possible and control the extraction...no dent. I can deal with that. I will talk to my smith about cutting down the extractor spring, etc. On warmer loads it still forms the two shiny spots and two small burrs around the case mouth though. I will have to address this issue with the smith as well. Thank you all for your help!

FWIW- for you 22-250AI guys I tried 3 different powders all with a 40 grain GS Custom bullet just working up for velocity only. 46 grains of H380 (very near 100% case fill) gave the the best results at 4347fps average with no pressure signs. Don't try this particular load with any other bullet! I mention this because I love H380 and was very pleased that it performed so well (so far) in the AI version.

Glad it works for you too, George. Now I have to play with seating depth as these bullets are tuned by seating depth not velocity. Then we will see how well the AI version will perform. Again, thanks to everyone and your expertise.

Default GREAT CALIBRE 22-250Ackley

Your neck denting problem can't be blamed on the calibre.
The issues you're having are blamed on the mechanics of your set-up.

22-250Ackley is a first rate wildcat calibre with very easy load building choices. The smaller sized 22BR is a totally different calibre and doesn't compare.

My 22-250 Ackley pet load is 53Vmax with RL15 @ 3900 fps under .250" @ 100 yds.
1:9 Krieger on a BAT

Enjoy your rifle !
