Can't sing, so I think....
Some of my best brainstorming is done in the shower. This mornings topic between scrubbing bubbles was the 6.8 SPC case.
The base case for the 6.8 SPC is supposed to be the 30 Remington case. The 30 Remington case is supposed to be a rimless 30-30 WCF case. The 30-30 case is the parent case for the .219 Donaldson Wasp. So, in theory a rimless 219 Donaldson Wasp could be built from a 6.8 SPC case for one of my shortened Mauser actions. Or a rimmed 6.8 SPC could be built on the BSA 1215 in the Gunsafe that is supposed to become a 7mm Waters. Should these thoughts be left in the shower to rinse down the drain?

The 6.8 is a shorter case than the 30-30 family. The base dia vary depending who's drawing you're looking at. i think i'd match the reamer to the dia of the brass (I was using) at the base.

Double D,
You are on the correct path/way, Save those suds and make it better, The 6.8 case has a head diameter of .442", IIRR, which is the same as the PPC series of cases?? With a 58,740 PSI values, and a case length of 1.690", IMHO, I would use only the 6.8 cases, not any of the OLDER REM cases you could find, to be on the safe side. Tia, Don

Don't forget the .225 Winchester for some applications. Not an AR of course.
I have a slickside upper and an SPC based cartridge is running neck and neck with another .223 for completing it. 6mm HAGAR if WOA will sell me a matched barrel & bolt. Seems sometimes they're available and sometimes not. Your Wasp idea is interesting. Configure it to use 6.8 magazines? SPC head is .422 which puts about 30%? more metal around the bolt face. Probably why the developers chose it instead of a Grendal. Last edited by barretcreek; 03-09-2015 at 03:59 PM. |

A friend designed a 22 cal case off 6.8 for his AR. It's shortened .1" and uses 28 grains of powder behind 90 grainers/.551BC going 2900 fps out of a 24" barrel.
I think it was getting 3100 fps with 75 vmax. It's the perfect AR-15 long range wildcat. |

In case the thought didn't go down the drain, if you're in the market for a set of 7-30 Waters Redding dies (FL and neck sizer), I have a set available. Sold my TC barrel a while ago and haven't used them since. Very lightly used.

Here's a link on a 20, 22, 6mm and 6.5mm caliber wildcats using the 6.8 SPC parent case. The cartridges are called the PDK (Predator Dog Killers) by Roy Winnett in Illinois.
22 cal. 80gr. JLK-VLDs approaching 3,300 fps and 20 cal. 40gr. V-Max approaching 4,200 fps. http://www.pdk20.com/20-VTK.html White Oak Armament was making AR barrels for this wildcat, not sure if they still are. Keystone Accuracy had a long-throated reamer for this wildcat too. Then you have the 22 Beast wildcat by Robert Whitley of 6mmAR.com for AR and bolt-rifle platforms. It uses the 6mm Hagar cartridge, which uses the 30 Rem./6.8 SPC parent case. Experiment and have fun!
