.17 hornet, shorting barrel to 20"
Any one chopped the barrel on a .17 hornet, I am back in NZ and planing on getting a moderator installed on my CZ Varmint, and the overbarrel suspressor is 4" forward of the barrel, wondering what I can expect for velocity loss, at least 100 fps , I am sure.
I am planning on checking speed, before and after, and will report back. |

The general rule of thumb seems to be ~25 fps per inch of barrel removed:
http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/...velocity-test/ http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/answers/...f-a-rifle-7662 Be interested in the outcome... esp whether accuracy is affected with or without the moderator? Seen reports that some rifle and bedding combinations have enhanced accuracy with the moderator fitted... apparently acts like a Browning BOSS style muzzle weight tuner. |

I'm going to guess less then that. You're giving up 4 inches but that's a pretty small case and I'm betting 20 inches will get most of what it has to offer.
Be sure and let us know ..

On a 20" Ackley Hornet I get 3625 fps with N120 and the 20 grain V-Max. YMMV

I had my CZ 527 (Varmint Model) 17 Hornet cut back to 21 inches when it was threaded to run suppressed and with the Hornady Superformance 20Vmax (advertised velocity 3650fps) I Avg. 3590 fps. I have no idea what the FPS was before it was lopped off and threaded but I've never had a box of factory ammo chronograph as fast as they claimed on the box so taking that into account, I'm not sure I lost much, if any, velocity going from 24 down to 21.
The 17 Hornet doesn't burn a lot of powder so I can't imagine there's much loss. I have a Sav. Bmag 17 WSM that I had the barrel cut back to 20in. and it Avgs. 2984 with the same 20gr bullet and they claim 3000 fps on the box for that stuff, so again, not much loss if any. My 17 HMR's usually shoot faster at 19-20 than they did at their factory 22in. length. I usually shoot suppressed so I'll gladly give up a tiny amount of velocity for a shorter more rigid barrel setup. |

B23, any velocity difference with/without suppressor. I never have checked to see if there is much difference with mine. I know I have read that some people see an increase in velocity with the suppressor but it is usually 50 fps

I have on others but not on my 17 Hornet. The most I've ever had a suppressor change velocity is 22fps but it's usually only 10-15fps on my guns.

Southernman, pity you weren't coming back from the US, I would like to get hold of 3 Green Mountain 17 cal barrels. Pretty sure they would be pretty good for a Martini in 17HH or 17AH.
Whos moderator are you going to have fitted?.........Kiwi |

I already have a DPT, 5 baffle in .17 cal, fits my sako .17 fireball and .17 hornet American, (which I intend to sell,) going to cut down the CZ 527 Varmint and keep that, Raining again, so might put a few shots threw tomorrow, Log speeds, and drive up to Hamilton and drop of CZ for a chop, and buy a Suppressor for my M70 7x57, Darren already threaded it.
