20 VTT or 20-222
Hello, Gentlemen
I’m new here been reading for a while but this is only my second call for help. I would like to build a 20 cal rifle based on the 222 rem case. I have a 222 rifle at present which I load for. Would like to be able to use as much as I can of the supplies I already own. I would like to avoid neck turning if possible. Not sure of the differences between the 20-222 and the 20 VTT? Also I have a Remington 722 in 222 that I can use for the project. Would that be the best way to go just rebarrel it or build a whole new rifle? Don’t no which would make the most sense financially? Thanks to all in advance for your thoughts and wisdom. |

Not sure I can claim a lot of wisdom. There are other options to consider. What do you intend to use it for? Which is more important: barrel life, ease of forming brass, brass life, velocity, accuracy?
I went the 20 Bobcat route. Great brass life, very good velocity and excellent accuracy. Also kind of unique.

Pacnor, and probably others, will do you a pre-fit in 20-222 no neck turning needed with Lapua brass. 20-222 is the easiest wildcat I have ever done, just neck down and go shoot the bugger. I use Redding S type Neck die in 222 with a 230 bush. Have fired my cases around 18 times and have never needed to F/L or use my 222 body die.

20VTT or 20-222
Easiest and simple one to do is the 20-222, no reforming of the shoulder, which you would do with the VTT, dies are somewhat easier to obtain. And as mentioned, just neck down the 222 case to 20, load and have fun shooting.
The improved versions will gain you about 100 fps more, but with a little more work than a standard 20-222. And a pre-fit barrel for that 722 will cost less in the long run and you will be very happy. Bill K |

Another vote for the 20-222. For some reason, Kindler's 20VTT design shortened the 222 case by 0.1 inches.

I'm using a Redding 222 Type S FL bushing die w/.230 bushing and Lapua brass. You can certainly go with one of the many "improved" versions of the 20-222 but IMO if you are looking for more speed than a straight 20-222 offers, just go with something with a bigger case like a 20 Practical and not even bother with forming brass or special dies. I know there is a lot of hype around the 20VT and 20VTT but they just don't offer anything more than the straight 20-221 or 20-222 offer. Last edited by B23; 11-24-2018 at 06:06 AM. |

20 VTT or 20-222
Funny how good answers always create new questions. Thank you men for the responses. The bobcat is intriguing what is involved with case prep? How does the bobcat compare to the 20-222 both good and bad? My go to rifle of choice at this time is my 222 rem made bye Anshutz. I enjoy long range shots on critters. Would like the 20 cal to increase my distance. It will be used to punch paper as well. Most interested in good accuracy velocity is handy as well.

If you're looking for more velocity, skip past anything off of the 222 and go right to the 20 Practical AKA 20-223.

Ha, now you changed the question from what 222 case to be used and barrel for your other 222 Rem. If you want more range, etc. and a good increase in FPS, but still ease of reloading, dies, etc. go with the 20-223 ( 20 Pratical) Bill K |

I agree with the above go to a 223 based case if you want velocity. With that said I have and enjoy a 20-222. Its accurate and keeps pace with a 204 while burning less powder. I like the 222 case. If I had to do it again there is something to say about the ease of the 20 practical. I built mine during the brass shortage and 223 was still easy to find.
