Default 221xp action

Just picked up a 221 fireball XP. Can anyone tell me what rifle stock the action will fit in? Thanks

Make sure of the stock fitting before you go buy one. You might even give a couple, like Boyds or Stockys a call and see what they tell you. I am not 100 % sure the Model 7 is right, just one I think I saw someone mention.

If its a rear grip XP-100 then it might fit in a M7 stock. I know the bolts are the same. BUT if its a center grip XP-100 then its definitely different. The tang is much shorter and not drilled and tapped for the action screw. The screw on a center grip goes down from the top through the ejection port.

Pretty sure the front action screw is in a different location on the front ring too.

At one time McMillan made a benchrest stock for XP-100 actions. I remember there were quite a few of them being used in the 1980s & 1990s

Default stock

The early XP action, ie 600-660 will not bolt right into a 7. The difference between the action bolt hole spacing is close to .125. Take an example of each and lay side by side and the difference is obvious.

I went down this road a couple of years ago. XP rifle stocks seemed to be in surplus years ago. I looked high and low. Finally found a gent that bought a rifle to convert back to pistol, yes it is legal. I got all of his extras for a decent price.

Fast forward to present. If they were bringing what I have seen them sell for in the past part of 2022, I would sell it and buy a custom single shot action! Way further ahead in the long run.

Looks like a McMillan M40 stock to me.

I remember people using XP actions in laminated birch and Brown Precision stocks too. At one time there were a lot of XP action bench rest rifles around here. Some in an aluminum sleeve and some not. IIRC, they were very competitive in the 1980’s and against pretty stiff competition.

I’ve never shot benchrest, but go out and watch their matches from time to time.
