Default factory crimp on 17 hornet

just wondering if anyone is doing a factory crimp on their 17 hornet reloads. reason for asking, I am getting wild extreme spread numbers from my chronograph. I know daryl does a crimp on his 22 hornet with good results.
some of the extreme spreads were as much as 160 fps with both lil gun and cfe blk.

I use the Lee FCD where it really helps shrink velocity ES and group sizes. I reason that the crimp allows the thin Hornet brass to keep the bullet in a consistent position until after the primer has ignited and the pressure from the powder charge builds for release.
I go for what I call a 'medium' crimp, where the indentation on the brass neck can be easily seen but the bullet underneath does not appear to be deformed.

How many seating dies out there won't do a "factory crimp" like the Lee die does? You may find if you read your instructions that you already have a die that will crimp.

I don’t believe any seating dies crimp like the Lee “factory crimp” die does.

Most factory handgun/pistol dies will crimp. Instructions show if you do not want to crimp, back them off, from touching the shellholder ever so slightly.
Follow the instructions with the die set and you will have no problems. Bill K

The Lee dies will give a crimp on bullets that do not have a cannelure.
Seating die crimpers need a cannelure for the brass to go into, or the case buckles while the Lee die does not.

I did not know Lee had a 17 Hornet crimp die, but it makes sense.

When the ranges stretch, you need low SD's.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if I had an ES of 160 fps, I'd be looking to remedy the problem somewhere else.

I think trying to cure a crazy high ES with a crimp, shouldn't really even be an option and would just be masking a potentially bigger problem.
