Default 338/06

Can anyone tell me if the headspace for the 338/06 A Square is the same as the 30-06, can I use the same headspace gage. thanks, bit off topic I know but thought there would be someone here who would know.

Looking at the drawings & dimensions of the two cartridges it appears that the shoulder location, diameter, & angle remain the same. The only change is the neck diameter. It would appear that it is like some other necked up only wildcats, like the 6x45 (223 Rem parent case), where the parent case headspace gauge can be used. Just my guess. I don't use headspace gauges on wildcats, but rather brass that has been FL sized in "my" die. Makes for a much better fit.

Headspace on the '06 case is taken at the Datum line - ie: where the shoulder measures .375". This should be no different for any round on that case - except for the .280 Rem, which has a longer body than the '06.

Some wildcats using the basic '06 case, do have differing headspace - but they are probably one-off reamers.

A-square has the .338-06 as a Proprietary ctg. which now has a SAAMI standard applied. Note that SAAMI, unlike the European CIP, is not law, but is simply a standardization guideline.
