20/222
G'day folks,
I have been infected with the 20cal disease. Am thinking of having a 20-222 built on a Zastava M85 mini mauser action (Rem599) that I have recently picked up for very good price. (200.00 Aud for complete rifle and mounts) Am hopeing to get a Pacnor no5 ss barrel from a bloke over here, probably in the new year. Have been in contact with Boyds gunstocks over there, and they tell me they are going to be making stocks for this rifle in your summer next year. Pacnor do a pre-chambered blank for 20-222. Am going to use Lapua 222 brass With regard to loading dies, this is where it gets tricky, is it possible to use Redding type S Bushing neck die in .222rem with the appropriate 204 bushing to neck size the brass. Was then thinking of getting a .222rem body die, if the need arose to full length size. Or is there someone over there who makes dies for this cartridge that arent custom,( thats me being cheap) I notice in my copy of Ackley vol 1 this is the only 20 being done then. So was it the first 20 cal cartridge developed? What do yuz reckon.?? camel |

s dies
My experience in using the S neck dies and bushings is that I don't get enough of the neck sized down to form brass. Once you have your brass fireformed it should work fine. I've stopped buying the S neck dies and go for the S FL dies. Easy enough to back it off a turn but still allows you to push the shoulder back. You might use a std 222 FL die with the expander removed and do a hard cam over, then the neck die, that sometimes works for me on a bolt gun with the camming action.

Check CH4D for the dies. Very reasonable.

camel,
Have you seen the Guns&Game article on the 20-222? They called it a 204-222Sprinter as Sprinter did the re-bore and chambering work back in the mid-70's. Cheers... Con |

Camel:
if/when you need a die reworked for bushings etc. Contact Jim Cartensen @ JLC precision.com I think he's a sponsor here, if not, some of us have his info. Take care & good to see you're on board among the rest.

camel,
He hasn't really committed to it ... but I can also place you into contact with a guy locally making bushing dies. No idea on price. I'll be emailing him in the weeks coming about making me a 22-204Ruger bushing die as I've just put one of these together. Cheers... Con |
