Default CZ Varmint

Did CZ make the 527 in a 22 Hornet? I am exploring several alternatives for both 22 K-Hornet and 22 Spitfire rifles and a factory CZ 527 Varmint in 22 Hornet would be an easy way to get there with the K-Hornet, but I don't know a lot about that brand though I have owned a couple in the past. Also, what are the differences between the American and Varmint models. I know the American is a classic sporter, but how is the Varmint model different - heavier barrel, different stock profile? Thanks for any help

I have the 527 American in 22H and in 221FB. The main difference between the American and the Varmint are barrel weight and barrel length. Check the CZ-USA website to double check for calibers and other info. The Americans are sub 0.5MOA at 100yds.

I am by no means a CZ 527 expert, but it is my understanding that a CZ 527 hornet barrel has a .223 groove diameter and a 1 in 16" twist. If true, is that compatible with your plans or would a 17 hornet CZ 527 varmint be a better starting point(obviously requiring rebarreling).

johnhenry, that is what I am trying to decide. I may be better off to just buy an action and a stock, then install my own barrel. I have my own reamer & gages already. Thanks

Joe I've used the Lilja #6 contour to pretty much duplicate the CZ varmint barrel. Eddie turns the 1.200 breech to 1.100. I ask him to back up from where the straight shank meets the contour .125 for the shoulder. I also have him cone the breech. I believe he uses 25*. It helps in feeding a little.

They made and still make the 527 in 22 Hornet. They are a great shooting gun, easy to load for and very easy to use as the basis of other builds. Calhoon makes a ton of different Widcats based on the 22H from CZ.

I have only used 0.224" bullets in my 527 American in 22 Hornet, and never have had any issues. I know both Hornady and Sierra make .223" and .224" Hornet specific bullets, but never felt the need to get the .223 bullets since the rifle is very accurate using .224" and have lots of .224" bullets for use in my other Hornets, 223 Rem and Swift.

I bought my first CZ, a 527FS 22 Hornet in late 2002. I bought a 527 Lux Hornet later. I have always loaded .224 Dia. bullets and they are accurate from these and other Hornets that live here. I have a 527 Euro Varmint in 223, the barrel is heavy and tapers from a short distance ahead of the chamber to 3/4" for the rest of the length and is 26" long. They made these in 222 and 223, I wish they made them in a 22Hornet. I forgot to mention that the standard CZ Varmint barrels are slightly tapered but heavier than the American.

I believe the "Varmint" designation included a couple of things:

1) Heavier weight barrel
2) Kevlar Stock by either HS Precision or Bell & Carlson
3) Flush bottom metal (no tabs)

I have only ever seen it offered in .223

I have seen a CZ527 Varmint in 17 Remington also, which had a heavier walnut stock and a heavy barrel.
