22 Grendel
Hey guys. Was wondering if anyone has had experience with this cartridge? I was considering getting a 224 valkyrie but just cant commit. The 22 Grendel seems to be a better cartridge for reloading. I was wanting something that wasn't to big but still reach out to distance on yotes and groundhogs. Talking 600 + yards. Also am considering the 6.5 creed. Just wanting to get some input and maybe you guys have something better in mind. Nothing to extreme though .

Sorry forgot to mention I was wanting a bolt gun and not an Ar upper. Not out of the question but prefer a bolt gun

Have you looked at the 22 Creedmoor? Factory brass available (albeit, Hornady), as well as dies, etc. I'm having a bolt-action .243 converted, but the .22-250 is a good choice as well. When Sierra releases their new 69 grain BK as a component... Wow!
Btw, I'm not discounting the 22 Grendel. I'm just throwing out another option. I will also be building a 22 Grendel on the AR15 platform this year. |

Thanks Eric. I didnt know they made a factory 22 creed. I will definitely look into that. Will definitely be looking into those 69 bk's from sierra. I shoot alot of their 52 grain match hollow points 👍

The 22 Creedmoor is very similar to the 22-250. Case capacity is more or less the same with just some geometry differences at shoulder/neck. You are using a large powder charge with a small bore. The result is a 1,000 round barrel life and if pushed hard then 800 rounds with accuracy dropping off fairly fast afterwards.
The Grendel case is 50% less powder then the Creedmoor case ... call it 31gr-33gr compared to 43gr-46gr. More barrel life and Lapua brass is cheaper for the Grendel. |

Personally I would put the 22 Creedmoor in the 22-250 AI class, not the 22-250. If I was going to build one, and I might, I would be avoiding Hornady brass and looking at the offering from Alpha instead. If your goal is a 600+ rifle, a fast twist 22 Creed is a reasonable suggestion IMHO. It is true though that the barrel likely will not see 2030, LOL. As far as the 22 Grendel, it is a good efficient calibre. certainly when compared to the 22 Valkyrie. You are aware I assume that both the Valkyrie and the Grendel are non standard size in the usual bolt rifle bolt face, being based on the 30 Remington and 220 Russian respectively. I'm not sure what your bolt gun is, but if the 22 Creed stinks in your opinion, 22 BR or 22 Dasher are also quite accurate, efficient and take a standard bolt face like the Creed.

My first thought was the .22 BR with a 9" twist to shoot 69gr. Sierras at over 3,400fps. Mine did (3,469fps 26" bl. 31.0gr. Re#15)

There are a variety of ways to get a 22 with roughly that capacity, so look at which rifle you want to start with and what components are available and go from there. |

I would think that any of the actions that start with a 220 Russian case would be a good choice, as they would feed from the magazine and really all you would need do is change/chamber the barrel to your 22 Grendel, if that is the cartridge you want.

I was thinking of using the Howa mini for my platform. Was probably going to get a 6.5 grendel then swap out the barrel. Would it be that simple? As far as the 22 grendel is concerned. What about dies? Is it a fairly simple process? I'm not new to reloading but haven't done alot of necking down cases.
