So, what's the difference between going to the "17 Fireball" chamber with the different shoulder angle and just necking down the .221 brass to .17? Sure would be easier.

The 221FB FL bushing die has lots of extra radial clearance around the neck to shoulder junction, once the neck is under 20 cal it leaves a bulge at the neck shoulder junction where that extra clearance is. Bump it with the 17FB FL bushing die without a bushing in, the bulge gets bumped down because the 17 die doesn't have all that extra radial clearance. At least that's what works for the dies I have.

My bushing 20 cal dies are Whidden and the 17 Fire ball are RCBS. My set of 221 Fire ball dies are RCBS, the only sets that are bushing dies are the Whiddens. Bill K

I should mentioned that I have had 20 VT & 221 brass made for me by a couple that post and sold on this site which they formed from 223 military/LC. I have formed brass with Rem 221 brass also, along with some that was formed down with LC.

Yeah, the regular non-bushing FL dies don't have the radial clearance right at the base of the neck a bushing die does, they hit the neck/shoulder junction 100% so The Bulge doesn't happen.

Bushing dies that incorporate the shoulder into the bushing don't have that problem either.

I don’t recall ever having a donut when making 17 FB brass.

I have always found 17 FB brass is much easier to find than the .221 brass. I have a XP100 in .221 and have considered making .221 from 17 because it is so easy and cheap to find. Larry

Default 17 Fireball brass

Where do you find 17 Fireball brass nowadays? Seems the only thing Fireball I can locate is loaded ammo at ~ $1.00+ per round.

Inquiring minds would like to know.
