12.2 for the 1680 and 11.8 for the N120 is right on as far as my M38 is concerned. Ive been using Fed 205 M primers for everything sm. cal. As to OAL-- .005" away from the lands seems to works just fine.
As far as bullets are concerned the 20 v-max never performed as well as the discontinued 20 gr. Bergers. As of late the 15.5 NTX with a load of 4227 and a Fed 205 just off the lands is the star performer. Five shot groups in the mid 2s to the mid 3s. They will also work quite well with N120. Unfortunatley all has not always been well with that rifle. Two trips back to Cooper and the installation of a new Lilja barrel finally solved the problems. Fortunately I purchased the rifle new and most was covered under warranty except for the barrel upgrade which I thought was very reasonable. The whole thing was a pain overall but I thought they treated me very fairly and now its a real shooter. Hope your problem is a little easier to resolve. Bob |

A full cased compressed load of 4198 is exactly what P.O. Ackley recommended.
No weighing just fill-em-up. One of these day I'm going to give it a try. |

BA, I was working on some loads for my 17HH, studied some load data and decided to give 4198 a try. I loaded up some midrange to the top. I have no idea how Hodgdon got another half grain in their cases. Mine are full to the case mouth, even tried a drop tube with no gain.
IMHO, yes it is a pita to load. I use my old B&M measure, it’s consistent with stick powders. Load is the best I have found for my rifle. I thought I had found magic, till I was looking through my Ackley books. Jeff |

don't fly blind, chronograph is your best friend. also try berger 20 hp or even hornady 25 hp, you never know what a rifle will like, even a different lot of the 20 vmax. have you tinkered with seating depth or different crimp tensions?

Seating depths yes. I have played around with that a lot. Crimp Tensions not so much. Haven't had the die long enough to really play around with it. I may try some 25's if I don't get the 20's to work.

IMR4198 or H4198?
P.O. didn't say--only 4198 The book was copywrited in 1963 if that provides a clue. Bob |

yep, thatl do it. Pretty much in any similarly sized .172" case. 9.7gr of the H4198 under a 25gr Hndy HP IS PLENTY accurate and easy on my 17VHA brass with 12.75gr H2O case capacity.
If I had to choose only one powder, that would be it for the 20gr through 30gr projectiles in similar sized cases. |
