Default 17-223 Long neck Military brass

Does anyone know anything about this brass?

I have about 300 or so cases that are sealed primer, some stamped FA73 and the rest RA66.

They have 17-223 dimensions except the necks are extended about twice the normal short neck, I haven't measured the neck length though.

I read somewhere that the military was testing this cartridge in the 1960's, but I can't find any specs.

Thanks for any help.

Default 17-223 cases

Its most likely based on the 222 Rem mag case, yet with the shoulder pushed furhter back. Try Googling those designations.

This is from James Calhoon's website
In the early 1970s when the NATO countries were holding field trials for a superior infantry round, of all the calibers that were tested to the 400 meter range (14, 17, 19, 20, 22, 27, 30) the entry that won was the "4.85mm Experimental". This round was a 222 MAG case using a 19 caliber bullet. It lost out to the 223 only because the military prefers a compact, jointed cleaning rod. Of course, the civilian crowd (that's us) prefers a one piece rod, and that makes the 19 caliber the winner!

I have a good supply of Lake City brass without headstamp. It is 223 with a very long neck and not 222mag. I also have some in 222 without headstamp. On some the flash holes have not been punched or drilled.

The regular .17-223 is on the right, of course.

I should've had this picture in the first post, maybe somebody will recognize this stuff and tell me what the skinny is on it.
