6.5 Build
6.5 Creedmoor build on Cabela's Savage 12FV.
Long process due to a barrel/barrel nut issue, which Savage eventually made right, so kudos to them. 1. Bought the rifle at Cabela's last fall on a really good price 2. Replace the recoil lug with a machined SS one and put on a SS nut because I don't mind the nut and I like the contrast 3. 10 coats of Tru-oil on Boyd's thumbhole Royal Jacandra stock 4. Devcon 10110 steel epoxy bed. 5. Headspace set on virgin brass to minimize stretch. Means I am below SAMMI spec, but I don't care because I only handload (could be an issue for whoever inherits it when I die) and I should minimize or eliminate ever having to trim brass. At least it worked on my Vartarg where I have never trimmed cases after 8+ loadings. Stuck with the factory 26" med-heavy barrel to start. 6. Minor fitting of the barrel channel around the nut, and had to Dremel about 2mm where the trigger assembly was contacting wood in the trigger well where the rear trigger screw hole comes through. 7. Tried IMR4350 and Sierra 142gr MK, then the "golden" combination of Hornady 140 gr ELDM and H4350. Shots 9 - 17 through this barrel were 3 different charge weights, and all three were basically one-hole groups. 8. Next up will be 5 shot groups at 100, 200 and 300 yards. |

I have three and all shoot 140gr bullets with 41.5 gr of 4350 very well.

Nice rifle and groups!! I like it!
I thought at one time the 6.5 was too hyped up... then started shooting a 6.5 Bullberry and was amazed at how accurate it is. Is there anything special about the 6.5 dia bullets?

Even with the factory tomato stake it shoots pretty well! That's why I like them! Many out there bash, but most of them can shoot.

Look at the history with the 6x55 Swedish Mauser. The 6.5mm bullets have always been fairly long, and therefore require a faster twist rate when compared to the larger bore Mausers.
