My thrain of thoughts is this:
The 17 Rem has been here since 1971 and until now Sierra has'nt touched the 17 calibers with a fire poker. The .204 is here a "little" over a forthnight and they spew good bullets out for that. But maybe it's like small caliber barrels: As caliber declines error rate rises. And the 17 is to much fuzz for them. I do hope that when Berger catches up with demand thay find the time to do some more of different 17's they used to do. Another thought about Hornady. Since they do all bullets for the 17HMR why cant we get some of them? The 20gr FMJ would be the bees knees for goose and the like, that i intend to eat. |

I believe that qc on the smaller stuff goes up for sure, however Sierra understands bullet making or I certainly hope they do since they have been around longer than the others that make 17 bullets. Iam sure that they can figure out how to make a good quality 17 bullet. For some reason, it doesn't make financial sense to them.

I've been a long time fan of Sierra bullets of all sizes with one exception: They don't make a 17 which I would buy in a New York Minute if they chose to do so.
I have talked to them in the past and they simply feel that the market is limited and that they can make more money devoting time and money to making and selling other sizes. Like most companies who are in this business, I'm sure they have done their homework and I would simply be guessing to say that I know more than they do about their business in terms of what they shoud or shouldn't make. Since the early 1970's I've shot Hornady 25 grain HP's in all of my bigger cased 17's, and I have a life time supply on hand, so I'm not generally looking. I do hope however that when they get back to full production of bullets that this now on hold offering doesn't fall by the way side as I've never been a fan of the V-Max collection in any bore size for hide hunting. The HP is simply a better choice based on experience. On another note, I also have a large stash of the old Remington 25 grain bullet which also is a good fur bullet. JMO - BCB

I too have always enjoyed a HP bullet for both fur and gopher shooting.
I found a stash of the old Rem 25gr a few months back so I purchased them from a guy who said he used them with great success on coyotes. The market was always very small for the 17 cal bullets until the introduction of the 17 cal rimfires. I hope that someday they feel that they can produce a 17 cal bullet and turn a profit. Until then, I will continue to use others and there are a greater selection now than a decade ago. It will be nice when we get past this production hurdle and see a full production line again from all manufacturers. |

I really like sierras line of bullets. I've had my best results handloading with them. If Sierra decided to make hollow point .17's I would definitely purchase them. I would like to see hornady make some heavier hollow point as well. The 20gr xtp would make a excellent bullet for the smaller .17's IMO and should be sold as a component. |
