making 338's
Hello,
Just joined and have some questions. Has anyone made any jacketed 338's? I would like to make some with thin enough jackets to open up @ 1200-1800 fps. They would be 180-200 gr to use on whitetails. I would be shooting the 338 Whisper and 338 Spectre. Any comments welcome. Thanks OutKaste |

The problem with over 30 rifle bullets is jacket availability. For what you've decribed you could probably reduce 35 caliber jackets designed for pistol bullets, and end up with a jacket long enough to for a 338 rifle in the weights your talking about, and still be thin enough to effectively expand. Actually jacket thickness is only one factor involved in expansion. The meplat opening, the temper of the jacket, ogive radius, and core alloy are all big factors. There are also dies, and punches that can serrate the jacket in various ways to promote/controll expansion. Either of the Corbins should be able to fix you up with what you need. It sounds like an interesting project.

I'd be very interested in you findings if you proceed with the 35 cal jackets...
How do you like your Spectre? Always wondered how it stacked up against the Whisper... j |

gunhaus,
Thanks for the info. I'll be looking in it. J Henkle, I do not presently have the Spectre. Looking to see what all is needed and available before putting the money into another chambering. If I can't get or make bullets for the 338, not interested in it. |

We had Andy out at Hawk bullets make some up for us and they work great. Intended for and tested with the Spectre from the 11" tube.
