.993-.994 for my case lengths, my chamber is .997.

I start at the lower part of the shoulder and I count to about 8 (not real 8 seconds) and then slowly bring it up the neck and then tip it over in the water.

Yes, the tips are still available at the woodchuck den.

My 22 squirrel is just as nice, can't wait to get it.

Harmon:

You're defeating the gain by quenching those cases!!
Let them air cool and they'll be much better.

Heat just until the color STARTS to change, then drop them in
a can to air cool. Don't quench in water. And only heat from the
mouth to the shoulder and quit.

I bought 500 Ultra mag cases at a buck each.
Enlarging 7mm and 300's to .358 I split 47 in all.

About the 40th one I decided to anneal the first time in my life and I started these games back in 1958 at 14y/o. To test these two ways. I picked 20 cases for each way. Quenched and air cooled. 7 of the first 10 quenched split! Not a single one of the air cooled split.

Maybe Bill K could kindly post a picture of those split necks I sent him.

Before you do it your way on many, test ten of each and see for yourself.

Good luck, that's why I suggested to search the board as this has been rehashed a dozen times over the years.

Regular tip, Map Gas, (heats faster than regular Propane) deep 1/2" socket stuffed with steel wool to bring the neck up to how much you want it sticking out. Electric or rechargable drill motor. Fire up the torch, stand it on it's bottom so you can use both hands. Stick the spinning case into the flame, count to maybe 6 or 8 or till the brass starts changing color. Thick gloves come in handy. Try it on some junk brass till you get the hang of the process and how long to heat. FORGET THE WATER QUENCH!! Hot brass dropped into a coffee can. Low room light makes it easier to see the color change.
Sure beats spending BIG $$ on a special machine. YMMV, Mike.

Default Annealing 17 squirrel cases

I would post a photo of the cases George is talking about, if I still had them, traded them to another party that could make use of them, as my use for them, changed. Plus I still have not figured out how to post photo's on this site, PD dumb..
But I can tell you, listen to George, the one's he sent me, about 47 or so, were all split right down the neck.. Bill K

( I would add also, do not water quince, drop them onto a damp towel or hard surface and let them air cool)
