Current .14 barrel makers
Long time since I've posted here - six years since I logged in, apparently!
What's the current status with .14 cal barrel supplies - specifically blanks? Who makes them? I think Pac-Nor may have done them as a special order but I've just read about their factory burning down When I got my .14 Walker built years back I got a reamer to cut a .14-222 chamber at the same time along with about 300 pieces of brass made by a member here. I'd be looking at maybe something 24" or 26" in length. The other complication is that I'm in the UK and it's a nightmare getting anything remotely firearms related out of the US without expensive licensing. I'm going to order a set of bullet swaging dies from Corbin so I may as well have the other rifle made to justify the cost of the dies a bit more. Any help appreciated. |

Back in the early 90's, I made 100 barrel blanks in .14 caliber and it took a little over 3 years to sell them.
I chambered around 20 of them for my ".14 Piss Ant" cartridge, which was the .25 acp. necked down to .14 caliber. Other guys that bought the remaining barrel blanks, we're necking down the 22 Hornet, as well as shortened and modified versions of the Hornet case, all necked down to .14 caliber. And as a matter of fact, I talked to an elderly gentleman in Casper Wyoming back around the first part of December, and to this day, he is still shooting one of my original custom Contender barrels in .14 Piss Ant! This was the first time I heard anyone mention anything about this in over a quarter of a century! It just made my day! I don't remember the name as it has been many years now, but there was a small barrel company that specialized in .10, .12 and .14 caliber barrels, as barrel blanks and chambered barrels. I'll do some checking around and see if I can get lucky and find some useful information on this. |

Wasn't it Lawrence that made those barrels?

I know when my old friend Blaine was playing with 14s he was using Jeff Lawrence barrels but Proof Research bought him out years ago and I've no idea what current status is.

Reed bullets
Tparrish, I have had excellent results with Reeds bullets and everything else I bought from him over the years. Own and have owned several 14's. Would rather buy his than make them myself. Lot less work. The 14's can be a pain to clean. I shot moly for years and still do in some barrels. All barrels in the 14's require cleaning to keep accuracy. Bare copper in some barrels with some loads fouls quickly and accuracy goes with it. Removing copper and fouling in the tiny barrels takes work. Also as the throat grows some barrels lose accuracy quickly. Having multiple 14's if accuracy drops on one and same bullets still shoot in another I dont blame the bullets. I start working on the barrel. After soaking one in a 50/50 mix of acetone and auto transmission fluid for a week and scrubbing good accuracy usually returns if throat and crown is good. Setting barrel back has been required. I have both .142 and .144 barrels in twist running from 1 in 10 to 1 in 6. Shoot the same .144 bullets in all. Stopped shooting turned bullets a few years ago and just shoot jacketed. Nothing wrong with turned just stopped making them when I stopped turning .10 and .12 calibers. I consider Reed a friend, he has always been first class in our business dealings. His products always as advertised. He has actively worked to keep the subcalibers under .17 alive after Mr. Bill Eichelberger passed. Definitely not a money making situation. It takes 7 pulls on a bullet press handle to make each .14 caliber bullet. Making jacket cups, cores, seating and pointing. I have the presses, and dies, have and do make bullets for my own use. At 700 pulls to form jacket cups, cores, seat cores, point and finish bullet, not counting time to lube and remove lube, polish etc for each 100 bullets. Not to mention cutting lead wire and everything involved in making cores. Go to the expense of buying dies, press, 17 caliber jacket cups to make the 14 jacket cups. The lead wire for the cores. Then spend hours turning it into 100 bullets for someone else to shoot. I wouldn't make 14 caliber bullets to sell if they brought $10 per bullet. My time is worth more than that to me. Rest assured if I make bullets now they are something I cant buy. A open forum is not the place to bad mouth anyone. Nobody will ever please everyone. Also a slightly over size bullet is usually more accurate, not less. I apologize for the rant.
