Powder change
If rumors are true and 4320 is being discontinued has anyone tried using N140 in their 17Rem with a 25gr. bullet? The burning rate of N140 seems fairly close to 4320.

I have not heard that rumor but 4320 is what I use for my 17 Rem. and have about 4 lbs of it so I know I won't be running out any time soon. I know 4320 has been a tried and true powder for the 17 Rem but a lot of guys are using other variations with great success.
I will be interested to see the comments from other people. BTW, where did you hear the rumor? |

Hodgon doesn't list 4320 on their website anymore.

HA! I've got a full new jug of it on the shelf.
Never had the cap off yet. Re: 2011 trip to foxhunters to pickup the Cooper VR and dropped in at Powder Valley. Left 'em almost a grand. IF they'd had primers in stock it could have doubled real easy. Oh well.

This is not good news if they are dropping 4320. I'm hoping someone has tried N140 as a substitute with success.

I've had good luck using W760/H414 in my 17 Remington with 25gr bullets. IMR 4320 was favored in my 220 Swift, so I may be looking around for an alternative also.

When using N140 in a buddy of mines 308 behind a 125gr. Accubond, not only was the load accurate, but the powder metered so much like 4320 I had to recheck to make sure of what I was using. That's when I got the idea of using it in place of 4320 in a 17. Looks like I'll be experimenting soon. |

One of my 308's likes R15, and my other one likes IMR 4895. I usually use a Dillon 550B with a Dillon measure, so I prefer to use ball or short stick powders.

I will have to try W760/H414 in my 17 Rem when I run out of IMR 4320. That will be a while as I don't shoot it all the time. |

IMR 4198 has been my go to powder for the 7 Remington for years. IMR 4064, IMR 4320, WW 760, and Varget have also worked well in the cartridge with 25 grain bullets.
Fortunately I have all of them on hand. Sorry to see 4320 going by the wayside as it is my favorite powder for the 22-250. -BCB
