Have more than one standard and K hornets. Using AA1680 in K hornet, my rounds are 150 FPS slower or more than the standard hornets using Lil Gun.

I'd for sure go with standard hornet, neck sized only in Lee Collet Neck sizer, CCI 500 primers, R-P Brass, and 13.5-14.0gr Lil Gun for 3100 FPS with a 40 grain bullet.

Accuracy is same, brass life is same, velocity is faster using Lil Gun and no brass fireforming to mess with.

Or, just get a .19 Calhoon Hornet..........my favorite going 3575 FPS with 28gr DBHP and 3350 with 32gr Sierra BK using AA1680

i see the 22 hornet has a great following!!!

on accuracy, if the 22 hornet will do 3" at 150 -200 yards, i'll say good enuff for government werk. 2" at 150-200 yards, i'll smile. 1" at 150-200yards, i'll dance and praise the gods of shooting. i "don't do"(or words to that effect) the accuracy game anymore. i did a .154" 5 shot group at 100 yards with the tc encore and 23" MGM heavy factory barrel in 20vt with a 32gr v max/18.7gr of rel7. i did a .217" 10 shot group at 100 yards with it too. i ain't no competition shooter, i did a 1 hole group(s) because i can. i realize that there are much, much better shooters than me. my gunsmith/best friend(RIP) and my other best friend(RIP) are just some of them. boy, do i miss them.

oh well.........the velocity of the hornet and the k doesn't really concern me that much. "i want it to shoot 40-50gr bullets with either jacketed or cast boolits." well, i lied, sort of. after sleeping on it, i decided that it will a cast boolit only.

btw: i still have the 20vt and it has around 3000 rounds thru her. i used to trim the cases to the exact length, neck ream, weigh the cases, weigh the boolit and all the other good stuff to get a 1 hole group. the 20vt is a 1/2"+/- at 100 yards with 34gr midway/midsouth hp and 18.7gr of rel7 in a 221 rem fireball(remington) case. i only trim when needed, no neck reaming, small rifle primer(don't matter which one).......i just load them up and shoot them.

One other point to consider is that the 30 and 35 gr bullets for the Hornet have pretty poor B.C. and get blown around in the wind pretty bad. I would suggest you stick with 40gr - 50 gr bullets, especially if you want to shoot 200 yd. or longer.

I have a KHornet reamer to try, but never have yet. Case life is supposed to be better, but I "think" most of the case life issues are because many rifles have headspace issues. I have 300 piece lots of brass so, I don't know if I will ever have a brass issue, as I probably will never shoot it enough to hurt the brass. I have Remington, WW, Privi, Hornady and RWS brass, but am still on the Remington and it is lasting fine. When I was younger I wondered why anyone would want one, now I wonder why I waited so long to get one.
The best preforming 50 Gr bullet I have ever tried in any of my hornets is the Speer 50gr TNT amazingly accurate, I wish they would make it in 35 Gr too

EXACT same load I use in my 20VT and it's lights out!!!! Same sort of accuracy! I tried all the powders, N120, 4198, CFE BLK, 2200, 1680 and RL-7 really shines in the 20 VT. Not to mention the 218 Mashburn Bee, 222 REM, and the 221 Fireball. I just love the stuff!!!!!

i used h4198 first and then i used rel7. i like rel7 over h4198 because it was just a little bit more accurate. i've used rel7 in the 30-40 krag, 444 marlin and the 45-70 and a few other cartridges that i forgot. when i had the 222 rem it was a 50gr hornady sp and a max load of h322. i shot the heck out of that savage m340 (222 rem). i bought it used, so i don't know the round count, but i shot around 6000-7000 rounds thru her. the front of barrel chamber was fried and the rifling was non existent or close to it. i should have rebarreled her, but i was young and dumb at the time. although i used the 223/5.56, it just wasn't that accurate. i've used the 223 in the remmy and the savage and powders and bullets galore, but could not find the accuracy that it needed.

Very true. The sweet spot in the Hornet is the 40 grain Vmax and Blitzking. About the best combo of speed, B.C. and great accuracy. I have shot quite a few 50 grain SPSX bullets out of the hornet. Great accuracy and they do expand very well even at the lower Hornet velocities. The SPSX is particular useful for subsonic loads with Trail Boss, they are actually quieter than most air guns. Cast 50 grain work well for the Trail Boss loads too.

I agree. Also check out the Hornet-specific bullets made by Hornady and Sierra, in 40 and 45 grain SP. They have thin jackets and provide pretty decent terminal ballistics at lower speeds, and they usually are lower priced than the tipped bullets.

A 16" twist Hornet will handle bullets from 30gr. on up to 45gr. and 50gr. lead tipped - both of mine did and with sub 1/2" groups at 100meters using Lil'Gun powder and both WW and RP brass including groups as small as .157" Centre to centre.
A faster twist, as in 14" is only required if wanting to use plastic tipped 50gr. or heavier bullets. 55gr. plastic tipped also need faster twists of course.
Usually the slowest twist that will work with a given bullet will give the best accuracy with that bullet - as displayed in the Bench Rest competition ranks. Thus, I see no reason to use faster than 16" rates of twist, in the .22 Hornet.

A lot of people swear by Lil Gun Powder in the 22 Hornet. I had way to many pressure spikes with Lil Gun and velocity's were all over the place. I tried different brass, weight sorting the brass, weight sorting bullets, compressing the load, you name it I have tried it. Although the velocity was great using Lil Gun the accuracy was just not there. I tried bullets from 35-55 grain as well. I found one load that was Minute of Groundhog with Lil Gun using a 40 grain Nosler. It's a Plastic tipped bullet and so the BC is great and it gets me out to 200 pretty easy. If you were shooting lower velocities the faster twist will certainly help.
