17 Ackley Bee Build Question
I posted here a while back about picking up some 17 Ackley Bee dies at a local auction and thinking about building a rifle for the set of dies. Well it's time for me to order a barrel and I've decided to just get a rifle barrel for my Contender. I am going to go with a bull contour but can't make up my mind on a length. Would like to keep it as a lighter weight varmint rifle. I'm thinking 20" but was wondering if anyone knew what length barrel that cartridge would need to burn up all the powder and really have no gain in velocity. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 20”
17Ackley Bee built on a Falling Block Works action and it is probably the most accurate little 17 I own.As far as burning powder in that length barrel I think you will be fine with the powders in the correct burn rate.Congrats on finding the die set and buying them,I believe you will love the Bee.

20" to 24" - whatever you want.
Mine both liked W680 powder, but that is no longer available. They also shot well with Re#7 with both 20 and 25gr. bullets. I would opt for a 9" rate of twist. H4227 was also a powder I used along with W296, H4198, H322, AA1680 & N120.

Thanks for the reply's. I will only be shooting 20 or 25 grain bullets. Won't go any higher then that. I was kinda torn between a 9 twist or a 10 twist. And have got mixed answers online about which is better. Can you explain why you feel I should get a 9 twist over a 10 twist based on the bullets I will be using. Thanks!

A 1 in 10 twist will not reliably stabilize a 25gr Hornady Vmax, a 1 in 9 will always work.
If you never want to use the 25gr vmax then no problem. |
