Red face Oddly enough

Some of the Hornady 20gr factory loads shot from my new 527A look very much like your photos. 18 rounds shot from the new CZ and two look like that. I reloaded those brass tonight and found the force to insert the primers was all over the spectrum. I didn't think to weigh the brass but did weight some new Hornady brass and was very pleased to find them very consistent at 52.somethingorother.

Way back about 1965 I bought a .303 British for my first wife.
There was a bunch of brass that came with it. Most of them looked
like these or worse. I'd only loaded and fired an '06 and never had been
exposed to such things.

First firings of the reloads it seemed like half the shells the case heads pulled
off and the bodies stuck in the chamber. I had no clue what was going on at
the time and no other brass either for a long time. hen they did break off,
I just rammed another round in and they usually stuck in the broken shell
and pulled it out with a back thrust.

The cases that didn't break off seemed to work just fine for at least half
dozen firings. She killed 7 or 8 deer with it over several years time.
Then stopped hunting to have more kids etc. Not long after that we div'd.
Later I heard their house was burlarized and the guns stolen.
She also had a guy come along that was the jealous type and started beating
on her. She shot his leg mostly off. Centered one in the knee cap.
Glad I got out of that one's way!! She got by with it too.
The judge told 'em: "self defense, give the lady back her rifle and ammo".

i am a bit concerned about the factory loads where the brass looks just like your photos. The thickest part measures .299 on more than one of the brass.
Are the factory loads too hot, the brass too soft or is my 527A chamber out of spec.?

Here's what I've done so far. FL resizing those same brass doesn't reduce the OD as small as the un-shot brass. Loading new brass with max loads of 4227 does not show any expansion of the brass in this area. None. That's with two different primers; S&B and CCI BR-4. Same thing. H4198 isn't supposed to develop enough pressure so it's no wonder they are exhibiting the same ring as the factory loads.

Hornady brass measures the same as new Hornady loaded ammo. I've noticed loose primer pockets in the new ammo when I reloaded them. Also noted one had dark staining around the perimeter of the primer making me think there was gas leaking.

Until I get some answers the factory loads are not going in my new CZ.

I wasn't going to post as most all has been covered I believe.
My experience of similar goings on is prett much like other folks.
But, here are a couple. I have some 30-20 ammo that has about the same marks on it. This brass/ammo is subjected to some what over the top a long ways compared to what the factory 32-20 is. Most is used with large doses of AA9/WC820 and 120-200 grain bullets, it will do what the 300 blackout will do. These were fired in TC and BF pistols, though I do have a Blackhawk Buckeye 32mag/32-20. The Blackhawk with the 32-20 launches a 140 custom plain base cast bullet at 1525 fps and change.

Now what I am getting at, as these cases are some what similar to a hornet case. They ammo box with bullet down left a mark on them at the top edge of the plastic. It does not come off when tumbled, there is a faint line. You want to talk nervous, I had around 1000 rounds for three different guns and they ALL showed the same thing. Ammo is built and used only in a specific rig, no mix match generic stuff.

As mentioned, I would get a jewelers saw and split one length wise. That would be the quickest and most for sure method, IMHO.
All the years of IHMSA shooting I saw a lot of lines such as above on cases. A lot on the hornets and rimmed cases especially.
303 Brit was notorious for this as mentioned. It is some what a different critter though.

I may just split one this evening. I don't have a photo hosting account so maybe if someone that does could post them for me. First dinner and a bit of rimfire shooting to test some new ammo.

I believe this would be a good chamber to make
a casting of. That way you'll KNOW what it's like.
Easy to do, Midway and others sell the Cerosafe
half pound bar for about $20 last I bought one.
Due to s/h charges it's best to combine it with more
items.

I just ordered a B/P front sight for $11, damned if they
didn't charge me $18+. When it could have been sent in
a small padded envelope they used a 6" sq box!!
Shows they don't care a bit how much of our money
they waste.

Thanks guys. I've enjoyed learning from your replies.
I did the scratch thing and felt nothing so cut this one open. Again, no evidence of a split.
I'll look to the die but I have an arrangement with my buddy where he buys the components and I reload for both of us. Occasionally he'll come acros a "bargain" that he couldn't turn down, - I now have three single stage presses and three sets of dies of various uses. Not complaining about that, but sometimes the bargains come with cases, some primed and some unprimed. What I'm getting at is the answer is going to be slightly harder to find. I've loaded a few hundred rounds now and never had a problem of any kind until the "bargains" came along.

You followed prudent advise and now know for sure the condition of the brass!

Fat Cat: Even Russian Roulette is right at least once! It's hard to believe you would brag about being "right" when that is not why he came with his questions in the first place. We do no good service, by holding out one solution, when others still can hold true, at greater risk (Knowingly).

But, it is nice to be right! i got a feeling that yours and all other's responses to this particular circumstance, will be the same, if it occurs again in the future.

Respectfully,

From Arkansas, too....

Bill
