Howa Mini question
Has anyone used a Howa Mini for a 17 Fireball/20 vartarg or shorter cartridge? Was just curious if their magazine would handle a short cartridge.
Thanks, Drew |

I have not tried it yet, but I would think if their action in a 17 fireball or 22 fireball worked, it would handle other rounds that are short like they are.
I have a mini in 7.62x39 and have thought about re-barreling to something like a 20 PPC. Bill K |

.223 length mag
Bill,
Shortest they offer is .223 or .204, was just curious if they would feed a fireball case or shorter. |

I have a 222. Best I can do is see if it will feed a 17 Fireball if that will help you.
I did similar check before I did something stupid, probably still one of the silliest mistakes I ever made. Howa Mini in 223,pencil barrel would vertical with very long bench session. I knew where there was some factory 22Nosler ammo for cheap, like the price of brass cheap. I bought one box went home, put the Nosler ammo in 6.5 Grendel magazine, put the 223 bolt in the Grendel rifle. It seemed as if it would feed fine. A barrel was ordered, after a wait it arrived and the swap was done. Stuck all of it into an MDT chassis. Runs like a champ. FYI there are options for bottom metal on these now. DIP, a gent in Oregon and I forget the other fellow (got mine from them). Gent in Oregon has triggers and I am ordering one Monday for the chassis rig. I really like the minis. |

My buddy did a .221 Fireball on a REGULAR, not Mini Howa, and it fed fine. I can't help but think it would work fine on a Mini, too.

Thanks
Thanks everyone for the replies. Will likely get a donor and verify on the mags before going too far with it.

A 17 FB fed from factory magazine into the 222 if that helps.

When I was researching building my 221 fireball the issues weren't about feeding, but instead extraction. Most bolts that had the extractor in the lug that would pull the fired case through the lug recess, would cause the cartridge to pop off. It had to due with being shorter than a 223 case that the geometry gets funky.
