Default BlackHorn209 for reducing loads?

A gentleman at Western powders explained that I can reduce my 17 HH, 22-250, 243 etc in the same manner as Trailboss, only issue would be bullets sticking in the barrel from to low a charge. What do you guys think?

Think its safe for my barrels in terms of nitrocellulose

This is the only other info I could find-

Default Blackhorn 209

If he could not give you any load data to work with. I think I would just stick with Trail boss and known listing, etc. Stay safe, rather than sorry. Bill K I do see some in the article, but use caution.

Thanks Bill.

I have only been loading for a short time now but I don't want to over look something and hurt myself... I guess the reason the Blackhorn209 interests me is its size ratio to a bottle neck case like Trailboss hence my inquiry.

But the guy at Western did not seem concerned about reducing down very low other than sticking bullets in the barrel.

The general rule for black powder: no void between powder and projectile.

Blackhorn 209 is a poor choice versus Trail Boss. The gap is no problem but the powder is very corrosive, despite the powder companies claims to the contrary. You need to clean the gun completely after every outing, particularly in humid environments and in a bolt action that would include stripping the bolt. Also, you would need to run magnum primers to ensure consistent ignition and smaller SD.

Trail Boss has none of these draw backs. I load 17 FB with TB and it metters into the small opening very well. Have never had bridging issues.

Dean,

Some how I knew that you knew the answer to this as we both have done reduced TB loads in the past. Thank you for clearing that up. Trailboss is just hard to find sometimes

I'll stick with Blackhorn209 for the muzzleloader only. It does work great in that respect.
