Looks like the barrel man is no more. Folks are wishy washy on Shilen it seems. Remarks to the effect that barrel life is half of others, mvarious calibers, nothing specific. I can pretty much get two Shilens for the price of one of the "others". I see no big deal, you get a fresh throat and barrel more often for the same money. I have a couple Shilen barrels and they shoot just fine. Have a shooting buddy that also would say the same. You might look over Ragged Barrel site, out of Sparks, NV for a barrel at decent prices also. They have a couple, but you might also check out the Wilson barrels they offer. Bill K |

My L461 has a 17 Rem 24" pencil barrel. It is a Cr-Mo Shilen 1:10, and it shoots just fine. I use waxed bullets, typically 25gr HP or Vmax, and it takes about 75 rounds before it needs to be cleaned.

Making progress. First big step, donor rifle showed up today. I am not going to shoot this thing as is!! I did not do that the last time and ended up with another 223 in the rack, lol.
Narrowed it down to NSS or Ragged Hole. Ragged hole has 1-10 twist. Shilen list a 1-9 twist along with a 1-10. Now to figure between the two. |

Thoughts on throating for the 17 Remington Savage barrel.
Donor rifle just leaning around waiting for new life. Jeff |

My rifle (1:10) will not shoot 30gr bullets, and the 25gr VMAX is the longest it will stabilize. If you want to run heavier/longer bullets, I suggest you go with the 1:9.

I called NSS about a Shilen select match 17 barrel 1-9" twist. He is checking and will get back with me.
I look here for what I should do on the throat. Hornady 25's are what I have a pile of. I am wanting to try some of the 30's and others as well. So am not sure what to do with the throat. Jeff |
