Default great project guns

Whittaker's has the Howa mini in 223 (complete w/ stock) for $289 on sale right now... Hell of a buy for a nice small actioned rifle!

No, I am in no way related to Whittaker's...it's just a good deal I thought I'd pass along.

A good deal indeed.

Do you think the boltface would handle a 221 case properly?

If it's set up for a .223, a fireball should work fine.(pressure wise) Only issue would be extraction and maybe feeding the shorter round? It'll fire it with no problem.

I've played around with the 7.62x39's and Grendels mostly although I have a 22" light barrel 223 that shoots well. I really like these little actions and have rebarreled them in 22 and 6mm Grendel along with a factory 7.62 that I reamed the chamber out with a Grendel reamer to make a .311 bore Grendel (long). I'm expecting 2650ish or at least an easy 2600fps out of the 125gr Sierra ProHunters on that one but I still need to make a sizing die for it.

I'm sure it's been hashed over before, but I just cut the mag release lever off to 1/8" proud of the bottom plastic and use them as is. Nice light little carry rifles in a smooth action with a very good trigger.

The bolt/receiver would handle a 221 fireball great. I think the magazine would also work, and you'd have plenty of room to play with bullets. I'm talking about the 223 version here...

And I'm the guy with the wildcat modified howa:

It took some modifications to work with this, but a 221FB should work right out of the box.

Anyone make a 6x45 on one yet. Mag length long enough for 85ish grain bullets?

The magazines are around 2.3" from memory. They're supposedly coming out with a new version of the magazine in the spring that will do 2.5" with 10-rounds in a chassis.

The whittaker web site sucks. Just now I can't get it to load anything but a bunch of cookies and scripts that show a blank page. I looked in my history and this used to be the link for the mini:

Price is up to 350, thanks for the link. Still a good price but one of those purchases that isn't needed and tough to justify another 100 dollars after shipping and ffl
