Default Anschutz 1730 K-Hornet

I have an Anschutz 1730 with SS barrel that has been K'd. Having trouble getting an accurate load. Does this rifle need .223 dia. bullets? Would be interested to know some good loads y'all have found for this rifle. I have Winchester and Remington brass, and Lil'Gun, Alliant 300MP & AA1680. Thanks for any guidance.

Try 12.6 of LilGun, Fed Small Pistol Primer, WW brass and a 40 grain Vmax or Blitzking with no crimp, seated at just under mag length. I have never worried about finding .223 bullets. Most guns after 1950 are .224 anyhow and those that aren't don't seem to suffer from the .001 larger size. I have owned a lot of Hornets over the years, including 3 Anschutz, and shot this load in many more non-owned ones. No gun shot this load over 1 MOA and many far better than that. The Annies would usually do 1/4 to 1/2 MOA. You can work on powder charge and seating depth to fine tune but if this load won't shoot under an inch there is something wrong with the gun.

Let me know how you make out.

My 22 K-Hornet accuracy load is 12.9 gr. of WW296, Federal 100 primer, pushing a 40 gr. Nosler Varmageddon bullet. It delivers 3125 fps in my 24" barrel and punches sub-inch groups at 200 yards.

No annies here, but in my CZ and Ruger K hornets.......AA1680 with CCI 500 small pistol primers is excellent.

Have gone through 3 range sessions with various loads of LG, Alliant 300MP & AA1680 and come away with the conclusion that 1680 gives up about 200fps to the others but is always accurate in both my Anschutz and Cooper, and pressures are relatively low, so I think that is where I'm going to go with these rifles. SD's with 1680 are pretty respectable also. Next best is the Alliant 300MP at .2-.3 grains more than comparable LG loads. I got good performance and accuracy with 300MP in the Cooper but not so much in the Anschutz, so to keep things simple I'm going to load with the 1680 and give up the small velocity difference.

Thanks to everyone who responded; it gives some re-enforcement to my decisions.

Bit of an update: Both my Anschutz and Cooper like the 1680 so well that I was inspired to prep another 100 pcs of brass for the Anschutz (already have 300 pcs for the Cooper). I am using some brass purchased from Midway a few years ago that is boxed as Remington, but headstamp is Hornady. Anyone else using this brass? I made the false shoulder and set headspace with about a .010 crush, also seated bullets for a hard jam. Boy, that is some ugly looking ammo! Fireformed brass came out great and after re-prep it's some of my nicest looking brass. A very interesting characteristic is case weight, which is around 46.8 grs, very light, and it holds a lot of 1680 without actually compressing the load (16 grs). I have tried some loads at 15.5 grs in Remington headstamped brass with 40 gr Sie BK that shot great @ 2950 fps and gave excellent accuracy. So, I am curious what other's experience has been going down this path. I load my rifles single shot and a 40 gr BK is seated only a little more that half way down the neck & about .010 off the lands. Judging by primers, bolt lift, etc, this is still not a very "hot" load. What say ye that use 1680 in similar loads?

Another update: Shot the 16 gr loads of 1680 with 40BK and they shot great giving right at 3000 fps and accuracy approaching 1/4" at 100 yds. Also chrono'd some of the FF loads with 15.5 grs & 34 Dogtown, and they shot quite well and gave velocity of 2950 fps, so I think this will be a good way to go for me. Both the Cooper and the Anschutz seem to be happy with this load and bullets have all performed well with it so far.

Not surprising results with 1680, results that mirror my own experience. I know this borders on heresy, but 1680 is basically the old Win 680 powder, so it's no wonder it works so well (Hey! I said "basically" ).

In my K-Hornets I've found that I can get good speed/velocity with LilGun and some others, but 1680 always gives me the very best accuracy, no matter what bullet I'm shooting.

A1680 gives up some speed to LilGun, but is nowhere as erratic in terms of pressure excursions. But I just keep coming back for the accuracy....oh the accuracy.

Even my little 1885 Low Wall K-Hornet seems to favor A1680:

No sage rat or rock chuck has complained about the 200 fps deficit either.
