Why Pac-Nor over Shilen? I have an older Shilen barreled 17 Remington Cooper Varmint Extreme that shoots fantastic, though unfortunately, Cooper did it with a 10 twist, not allowing the 25 VMax to stabilize.

Products that I am looking for but can't seem to find no matter how hard I look:
Leopold Scopes, Forester reloading equipment and Victorianox knives.

I video recorded all of my Highpower Rifle matches. Pretty soon I am going to watch them all in reverse order so that I can watch those F Class guys GO HOME and leave us alone so that we can shoot Highpower Rifle.

Lightbulb The Pac-Nor.......

.....barrel I put on my Sako L461 single-shot 17-222 is a 3 groove 9.0" twist.

If I recall correctly....back-in-the-day......Shilen only offered a 6 groove 10.0" twist.

Hope this helps.

If Shilen only offers 10 twist in 17 caliber, I then wouldn't use one for a 17 Remington, or the largest 17s. I might use a 10 on a Fireball and smaller, but I generally feel that my Fireball is for 20s and my 17 Remington for 20 and 25.

My Manson short freebore chamber 17 rem necks measure .1995-.2000. Make sure the crown is not boogered up, if you set it back and the crown is bad nothing will change.

Why PacNor? As Kevin alluded, I'm sold on the 3 groove barrel that PacNor makes. Nothing personal......

IIRC, Shilen does make a 1-9" 17 caliber barrel. A 1-10" twist barrel is all I have ever seen from Cooper on a standard 17 Remington rifle. No idea why they went that route...?

My 17 Remington is a L461 action with a Fajen stock, and a 24" Shilen 1:10 pencil barrel.
Except for the 24" barrel, it looks just like an H&R P317. For the longest time, I think Shilen only made the 1:10 twist. It will shoot 25gr VMAX about 3/4" for 5 at 100yds, but doesn't keyhole. That barrel must be right at the ragged edge for stability. Wish it was a 1:9, until it get shot out, it will stay a 1:10.

Thumbs up I guess I should have said..........

........back-in-the-day......meant the 1970's.

I've a 17Rem very much like TinMan's.....except 20' barrel. I use the old nice Berger 30gr. FB Match/Target bullet(I've squirreled away a few, over the years) in it for coyotes.......they stabilize well in the old 10.0" twist(measured) Shilen barrel.

Works great when calling yotes.

Kevin, "squirreled away" made me smile. Yes, save the good stuff for when you really need it. I have a few of those Berger bullets and even some of Clint Stark's Red Prairie bullets also for various rifles.
