Default Re-chamber 17 Remington ?

I have a Shilen 17 Remington barreled 700 that does not shoot well. The chamber was cut with a Clymer reamer, and the fired case neck diameter measures .196xx plus or minus....but the freebore is so long that the bullets will not come close to touching the lands....no matter how far seated out...(you gotta have some of the bullet in the neck!).....accuracy is very poor with whatever loads tested. Bbl is a Shilen SS match grade, new when I got it, with very few rounds down it.

By comparison, my CZ 17 Remington fired case necks measure .200xx, but the bullet seating depth is .037 shorter.....this and all my other CZ 17 Rems shoot sub 1/4"

Am thinking a re-chamber with a zero freebore reamer might fix things....? I have at least 2 inches of extra bbl that is full diameter to accomplish setback.
Would appreciate recommendations on who you all might think best to do the work.
Thanks,
Steve

If the barrel is relatively new, i.e. only a few hundred rounds, you could send it back for inspection first. It may have an issue that a setback won't cure.

I've had the bbl way tooo long to approach Shilen with quality problems, just did not get around to shooting it until recently. I do think it is the freebore issue.......but I've been wrong before.

If you can get some sort of measure of how much free bore you have, just set the barrel back a turn or two and rechamber with a good reamer.

Believe you are on the right track, have the barrel set back and a reamer ran in with the short free bore and difference neck size. Having a gunsmith do this will not run you more than around 100-150 dollars and probably worth it.

I wish you better luck than I had with the 17 barrel. I had one chambered in one of Ray's 17 wildcats (similar to 17-204) and kept blowing bullets up. Had it "inspected" by Shilen, they said it was good. Had it set back and re-chambered to 17 Rem, still blew up bullets. It's now a tomato stake. I will say, it did shoot accurately IF the bullets didn't blow up.

If you do set it back, make sure that it is set back far enough so that the new reamer can completely clean up the old chamber.

Yes, not totally cleaning up the old chamber does happen, and it can be a PITA if not re-chambered properly........ Nothing is worse than having part of the old chamber left..........
