Default Mach 1V to 17 Fireball

The story is I have a 17 Mach 1V that is coming up for a rebarrel and my smith only has a 17 Fireball reamer.

My question is can 17 Mach 1V brass be resized to fit a 17 fireball chamber. And yes I know I can just go and buy Remington brass BUT I have formed my brass from 222 Norma brass and it is once fired.

As I recall the design of the 17 FB was "supposed" to keep the mach4 from chambering, there are a few different versions so I guess you will find out. Have someone put a piece of you brass through some dies and see what you get. Larry

Default reamer

You can't get your smith to split the cost of a reamer? It wouldn't cost much more than 10.00 in a flat rate box to get it.

The 4th Ed. Hornady manual shows the MIV length to shoulder is 1.058 vs 1,065 for the 17 FB in the #7 Nosler manual. MIV is a little less diameter at the shoulder and the FB case is .001 longer than the MIV. All designed to keep someone from loading a factory FB into a MIV chamber shortly before contacting Remington's attorneys.
Expanding your cases to .20 or .22 and size 'em back down creating a false shoulder should work. Leftover details from my brief desire to build a FB.

I have a Mach IV print here from PT&G that shows 1.0646 to the shoulder.
That would make a difference of than 0.0004 between the two.
If your smith chambers for a 17 FB and you use a 17 FB die you can use all your brass.
Your Mach IV dies might well work also with the FB chamber.
.There really isn't any difference between the two.
You could also have him use your brass for the headspace gauge but 17 FB ammo might or might not fit but your brass would. Kenny

Things I would ponder.

The 17 Fireball has a SAAMI drawing set FWIW. I am not aware of such for the 17 MachIV. There is always a potential of some variance in wildcats.

If you value your brass, quality or quantity, you might consider buying a reamer for such an endeavor. Solid pilot are about 95, medium live pilot about 110, custom about 150. If you really like what you have already, then one might consider owning your own finish reamer/gauges. Gauges are around 25 per and are a double check on your numbers from measurements with a depth mic.

Some reamer makers will make a reamer from your fired cases. Remember they will do just that, so the cases you send have to be fully formed and fireformed sufficiently.

If you know how your chamber was done, ie what specific reamer, the same maker can make you your very own.

Not all smiths will belly up to the costs of a reamer for a one time job, depending on their customer base; just economics for them.
