It depends what you are looking for accuracy wise. Late in the season I will sit up on or near a talus slope and more often than not will spot a chuck peeking at me through a narrow crack from behind a couple basalt boulders and may need send a bullet through that crack to take it out. You are going to need to have absolute confidence of where that rifle shoots to and I just don't see how you can have such confidence w/o shooting groups with it.

Just for an example I went out this morning and put up a gong @ 500 yds. I was shooting a Savage model 10 in a plastic stock with a 2 pound trigger. The only thing not stock is the barrel, it is a Criterion 223 ack imp 8 twist. I was shooting 75 Amax @ 3000 fps. I shot 2 3 shot groups, the 1st was 2.5" and the 2nd was 2" and that's good enough for me.

Shooting groups like that, with a 223 caliber, you should be entering more than a few of the mid to long range shoots and cleaning up on awards and/or cash.

If you can hold sub .5 MOA out to 500yds you're wayyyyyy ahead of the curve and Bill is right you should enter some competitions because you'll clean up with that kind of shooting. |
