Know what you mean. I was given an old H&R single shot that was rusted pretty bad. It was easy to clean the single barrel down, and re-blue but the receiver was to much since I was told that if I took it apart I'd need a magician to get it back together. Took off the rust and old finish buffed the metal up by hand and actually sprayed with Spar Urethane. Dried smooth as glass and it's the exterior stuff so it actually ages over time and gets a color to it that looks old. The serial number says it only 2 years younger than me. for a old junk shotgun it actually looks nice.

20 yrs ago a friend gave me an OLD M-30 Browning 12ga.
Knew a guy I shot with that had a brother playing instructor at
Trinidad gun school. sent it to him. thought I'd lost it, gone without a word
for over two years.

Finally got it back rebuilt and tightened up. Haven't shot it.
Bare metal. So far no rust showing on it. Sure don't want to
paint it with anything.

My problem is the humidity here and the receiver looked nice as buffed metal so I coated it with that urethane. It's not worth anything but it was given to me by my son-in-law who got it from his father. I couldn't bring myself to just trash it.

That's half why I still have this Ithica.
It was my first shotgun. Poly choke pos on it.
Never could hit the barn from inside the place.

Gave it to Dad. somehow he got where he could hit
most doves and did well on ducks with it too.

He'd had a M-12 stolen from his truck at work. he drove
a ditch for a couple miles to and from the house and kicked
ducks and doves up all the time on his way to work 25 miles
in town. Unhandy to take the gun back to the house.

Those days most trucks around these parts had a gun rack in
the back window.
Now that he's gone I got his three guns, one is this shotgun i got back.
I'll never shoot it again, but, it needs to be kept decent at least.
