Smile 20BR-IMPROVED testing 50gr Berger

Shooting my 20BR IMPROVED on a BAT action with PacNor 25" bbl.
Tested a discontinued 50gr Berger Varmint @ 300 yards with 3730-3739 muzzle velocity.
Bullet was shot into bulging 7 in. thick water jugs that were lined-up.
The bullet didn't touch the second jug but there was a dimple in the opposing wall of the first plastic jug where the bullet almost exited in the second jug.

The pet load groups 1.1 to 1.5 inches @ 300 yds.
Loves 30.5 grains IMR 8208 ES 15.o SD 5.65

The bullet totally fragmented into a 100 pcs. at this distance.
I think it'll exit coyotes under 300 yards but past this distance it'll be fur friendly with enough energy to make clean kills and that was my objective

What twist barrel are you using for the 50 grain bullets?

Thanks for the picture of the bullet fragments. I always wondered what that looked like. Should really tear up the innards of a varmint.

Default 20br-imp

This is a single shot BAT action which is 10 years old and super smooth reliable and beautiful.

In comparison to a DEFIANCE Deviant that I had built on a 6.5x47 which I quickly sold as it was the worst action I have ever owned. It was pretty but extremely gritty - binding and sloppy and the neither the manufacturer or gunsmith could explain themselves or help.

My BAT rifle has 4 barrels / different calibres that I change myself in less then 15 minutes which are 20BR, 22-250Ackly, 243Ackly and 20BR-IMP.
The 20BR-IMP requires custom dies whereas the 20BR simply uses 22BR dies with proper bushings.

None of these require turning necks and I dont heat treat brass.
The 20BR likes the Berger 40 and 39SMK , both @ 3900 fps
The 22-250Ackley likes the 69SMK @ 3600 fps

Have you tested bullets for friendliness this way before? Does the test seem to hold true? Not being judgmental genuinely curious. I know water is better at stopping bullets then most people realize. Look forward to the results on game. Great build, lovely rifle.

I'm not sure if shooting into a water jug is an ideal test.
But, I wanted to do something and see the results.

In my example I shot from a distance of 300 yards because at that distance the bullet will have lost speed/energy and therfore the bullet would have been expected to be less fragile ... but it wasn't.

I expect this load will have too much energy on coyotes under 300 yards but has the benefit of excellent killing energy at 400 - 600 yards plus

I believe that shooting into jugs of water will vary in test reults when shot at varying distances.
