Default Another one of my weaknesses......... Custom knives.....

Like I need another one.........

Since hunting and shooting have been a part of my life for years, I guess that a weakness for custom hunting knives is a logical part of that. I received a package in the mail a few days ago with the latest addition to my collection, and I was not disappointed in what was in the package.

The knife is a nice petite 3.5" skinner with a 3" cutting surface. The scales are cocobolo with a very cool insert on the let hand scale/side of the knife. The knife fits in my hand like I had sent my hand to the builder so that he could build a knife around it. I think that I'm going to truly enjoy using it this fall and winter and beyond.

Very nice. Looks like a great design. Is the very end of the scale on the left side a bone inlay? What blade steel did the maker use?

It appears to be a polished bone inlay but I'm not certain. Seeing it when I opened the package was a nice surprise that we hadn't discussed. I'm gong to call him Monday to find out. He uses S35VN stainless cutlery steel manufactured by Crucible.

Its nice to see others have the same afflictions I have. I love my firearms but custom knives seem to rank right up there with them..

I have been getting into the Damascus blades lately and my knife guy sent me this one over the summer.. I have a couple of his hunting knives too, all I can say about those is they stay sharp for a long time before needing a touch up. My most used knife will dress 2 hogs before it needs touched period. This one is watching from the display rack as I type this.

I'm a knife/tool sharpening nerd. Sharpening edged tools is one of my preferred methods of meditation.

Since I get to cook pretty much every day and carry a pocket knife any time I'm wearing clothes, but only get to dress out a deer 3 times a year, max? Plus, I spent some time as a chef while going to school?! I spend a lot more of my time and "obsessive compulsive disorder" on sourcing, maintaining and modifying kitchen knives and EDC pocket knives rather than on my couple of hunting knives.

I carry an orange handled Mora companion stainless for field dressing, have a red handled Frost's/Mora carbon steel for use back at the barn when butchering our chickens, ducks & turkeys. Both are easy and quick to sharpen to a razor edge, decent steels but not super hard. And both are replaceable for under $20 if I lose them in a snow drift... Which personal history tells me is a lot more likely to happen than losing a knife in my kitchen.

Kitchen knives, I go a lot higher tech on the steel and manufacturing processes, because when I cook, I tend to cook a LOT. A best grade kitchen knife which you will enjoy every day and your grandchildren might still be using after you are gone is more than worth the extra cash over whatever junk Walmart/Target & etc. are selling.

I do also own PRETTY and custom knives featuring "damascus" blades, fancy wood and other handle materials, folders with cool mechanisms (automatics & etc.). But those just sit in a cabinet most days. The stuff in the above pictures is what gets used hard.

I’m pretty sure that the light colored part is the sap wood.

I had saved things like "disposable" surface planer blades, dull bandsaw blades, dull files & etc. against the day I got time to set up a forge.

Spec'd out an LP burner and picked up some fire bricks, refractory cement and other supplies this week. It's cold enough so hugging a big fire isn't too unpleasant around here, finally.

Those are some nice knives fellas! I don't know how to post photos on here but I had a couple of custom knives made by a master knife maker down in Texas by the name of "Chops".
Before I went on an African safari several years ago I had him make them using Blue Wildebeest horn for one and Kudu horn for another that came off of lion kills.
While he told me they are built for everyday use, they are too pretty for me to use. I gave one to my best friend who I went to Africa with and the one I kept is on display behind a glass case in my home.
I really like knives myself and I am sure have too many! LOL Can you really have too many?!?!?!

My favorite custom knife is without a doubt the worse looking one of the bunch. Its an original Ruana 10B M stamp knife that I bought in late 1972 for $65 in a gun shop in my then former home town in NE Wyoming. My wife and I were visiting family there over the Holidays.

Back then, Rudy Ruana made his knives in Bonner MT and would load up his car trunk and travel to sell his wares. At the time that I bought the knife, my family was in the process of growing bigger than just me and my wife, so it was a stretch to spend the money. But I got permission first.... And it became my Christmas present from my wife......

Anyway, it has seen a lot of use over the years and it has even grown a bit in value since the day I purchased it. Several years ago I took it to a knife making/knife collecting convention in the area where I live to see if I could find any history on it beyond what little bit I knew at the time, and I was offered $700 for it "as is" by a collector there. The M Stamp knives are important to collectors in that the M on the hilt signifies a knife made personally by Rudy Ruana in the time frame from 1962-1983. I still own it......

Today prices for Runana knives are crazy on the internet. I don't know how many sell at or near the requested prices but they exist none the less........ Rudy's old company still exists through his son in law and others.
