Default 222 Remington advise

A search of our archives came up with nothing. Going to load my first 20 rounds of 222 today. Suggestions wanted.

What I have on hand but my reloading store is a mere 2 minutes from my home.

Powders: H4895, Varget, H335, CFE223

Bullets: 40gr Hornady FBHP, 55Gr Dogtown HP's

Primers: CCI #400, CCI#450

Once fired Remington Brass

I checked the twist on the new Remington 700 and it seems to be a 1 in 14. I did the brush and measure the rod trick.

If you would be so kind as to give some suggestions were you would start and use. It has always saved me a bunch of time before.

Stevo,

I have had excellent results in the triple 2 with:

Accurate 2200, IMR 8208 and H4198 powders

Hornady 40 grn Vmax and Nosler 40 grn. Ballistic tips.

Remington 7 1/2's and CCI 450's

I have recently been using 2200 and factory seconds 40 grain Ballistic tips together and shooting groups that make ya giggle when you look through the scope.

I use the heavier pills (over 50 grn.) in the bigger 22's (220 Swift & 22-250)

It surely wouldn't hurt to try the components you have on hand, you never know what your rifle likes or dislikes until you give it a whirl.

Aaron

Default 222

For what you listed the 335 was quick enough, get some 4198, that has been the go to powder forever on a triple deuce, my old L461 222 one loved it.

My old Lyman book shows RX7 for top velocity

Followed closely with H335 and H4198.

Velocity ain't everything. Kenny

The same components in a 20 caliber

would add 150 yd to the effective range.

I will be shooting this gun in the summer at paper and Groundhogs. Been in the high 60's here and the forecast is for the same the rest of the week. Do you think H335 is OK as long as I stay under the Max? I really would like to get it around the 3000fps mark but treasure my eyesight. I forgot I can't get any powder today as the guy is only open on Friday and Saturday. Just hate the thought of shooting a Groundhog in 90 degree heat and hurting my gun or myself.

Hogden has a starting load of 22.5g that will get me there for H335

Default 222

I have always had great results with RamShot X-Terminator and IMR 8208XBR usually using a 50some grain Berger. The X-Terminator is the same powder as Accurate 2230 if you can find that

Default H335

I shoot a lot of H335, in fact it's all I use in my PD guns in both 223 and 204. I don't load it over max but I'm pretty darn close and have never had a pressure incident after 1000's of rounds. Nor have I seen any noticeable change in speed that affects POI. Load responsibly and take care of your ammo in the field. Load over max, set your ammo out in the sun to cook and you'll probably have to take a block of wood and pound your bolt open.

As for favorite 222 load I'm in the RL7 camp with a 40gr Berger hp, 7.5 primer and Rem brass. In a pinch the Hornady 40gr Z max has also really performed.
