Without knowing the powder, charge, and indicated velocity it is difficult to give any advice. You could be using a non-optimal powder for that cartridge/bullet combo. A lot of time you see big velocity variation in lighter charges. Most of the modern powders get their most consistent velocity and accuracy approaching max loads.

Have you tried weighing your brass? You just may have some mixed weight brass and the case capacity difference between them is causing the higher pressure / velocity spreads.
As stated above, it would help to know your load specifics and barrel length. |

A very minimum or very maximum load can show high ES with middle loads being fine. If a reasonable load try a different powder/primer combo if ES is a concern.

the load is 28.0g of ADI AR2206H (Hogdon H4895 extreme) with 39g sierra BKs and WW brass doing 3700 fps.
Chrony is CED M2 with IR screens in my 100m covered range. I've had quite a few E1 errors with the chrony with the 204. Every other cartridge its never missed a shot but with the 204 its missing quite a few shots, but dont think the velocity spread is chrony error. |

QL shows this combo to be an ok load. I would look at your case capacity / weight or now as you are stating above your chrono issue.

Was the brass annealed. I would think this to be a big factor in neck tension.
