Exclamation Help with Federal Primers

Hello all.
I like using Federal 205M primers & Remington 7 1/2 BR primers.

Well during the shortage I wound up with just bunches of Federal 205 M AR primers. The boxes say Match AR Primers for use in AR rifles.

My question is, you think these are too hard to use in bolt guns? You think accuracy would be about the same as 205M's. Have you ever had experience with these? People, any comments or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have more than I could ever use in my AR's.

Thanks,
Jim D

The cup is probably thicker or harder to prevent slam fires in the AR platform. I would highly doubt the priming compound is any different than the standard 205/205M primer. They should perform just fine in a standard bolt rifle with a normal FP spring and will resist blanking if you have a loose FP to FP hole fit. I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

I would not worry about using them in a bolt. They should work just fine and I would bet you will notice no difference between them and what you were using. Bill K

Thanks guys,
I just felt I needed to ask. I don't use many different kinds of primers.

Do you think if I replace my 205M primers with the 205 M AR primers in existing loads, I need to drop back a grain or two & rework my loads?

Thanks,
Jim D

Advice on most all reloading data, says to drop back a few tenths or grain, when changing anything. So too err on the safe side do so and work back up.
You will probably find that you will come up with just about, if not the same load, that was working for you in the first place. Bill K

Unless you are very near max load I would just change primers and see what it does. The AR primers were very hard to get in some places, you may find you can trade those at 2 boxes for 3 of the regular ones if you are in an area where there is still a shortage.. If not, they will shoot exactly the same as regular 205s.

Call Federal and find out the real story.

Let us know what they say.
