Don't know about Coyotes, but I have killed a number of Badger with 17 HMR and the 17 HM2. I only take them when I can make a nostril, eye or earhole shot.

Those badgers are also one tough customer. Good shooting. Like the looks of your 17 there. Bill K

I agree guys . I think a 17 hmr is up to the task with proper shot placement. I like a little more margin for error but dont fault anyone for using it.

One thing I forgot to mention, shot placement is critical, but the HMR and HM2 are well capable.

Pictures can be pretty deceiving. And coyotes are hard to guesstimate even in person.

This is about the third biggest one I took last year. A very big coyote for my area. I did weigh him.

I think most people would probably guess him quite a bit heavier than he actually was. Even my hunting partner, who has watched me weigh literally hundreds of coyotes, was pretty far off on his guess. He would be a pretty average or actually even a pretty small coyote in some of you guys areas I guess.

As you stated, pictures can deceive . . . but that is a large coyote! Largest two coyotes I ever shot were not weighed: one in Montana, and one in SD.
Back when I used to kill a few, here in IA, neither yours truly, nor, my pals ever got a weight correct - if we guessed 40-43, they usually hit the scale at 35-37 Lb., ans so on. The heaviest I ever put on a balance, was a HUGE IA dog, which weighed 43#. Over 35# is large around here. RG

That is so true DAA. They are like fish in guessing weight. Most do look bigger than they actually scale out. But it is all fun and a pleasure to get out, chase, spot or call them. Bill K

For 90% of the hunters the HMR is the perfect tool! What other rim fire cartridge can stick it in a yotes eye at 150yds?!!

Maybe the new 17WSM, but I don't want too buy another 17 rimfire, when this HMR is working just fine. Bill K
