Default 20 cal Build for 40gr VMax

Haven't shot my small calibers in years but getting back into it. Have a 20ppc with 10" Twist that likes the 40gr VMaxs. Like to build a new rifle with a little less case capacity for 200 to 300 yards. Have tons of the VMaxs so want to be able to shoot them. Any suggestions? Thanks

20 VT with a 1/11 twist barrel. and AA2200 or Rl 10 powder, would work great for you.

I really enjoy my 20 VT, but I shoot 32gr bullets, Had a 20-222 at one time and thought it was about perfect. But for practical reasons, the 20 practical is very hard to beat.

Default 40gr 20 cal cartridge

A 20 Practical would not be much of a powder drop from a 20 PPC. A 20-222 would be less, but not as much as a 20VT. If I were to choose, I would go with the 20-222. JMO.

Thanks for the responses. Would a Vartarg with an 11" twist be safe for Vmax? I have several thousand of them and don't want to end up with a non shooter. I am at 900' altitude. I do like the idea of the 221 case. Are dies easy to come by?

The 20VT w/11 twist would be great for your stated purpose. AA2200 will be your best friend w/ 32 or 40 gr bullets. My friend "Humble Henry" Rivers shoots 40 BIBs in his, I shoot 32 V-Max in mine, either works well in an 11 twist. "mule" has some used dies currently for sale.

I don't know about others but Lapua no longer makes 221 brass so if you decide to go 20-221 it may be a good idea to source some good brass before you stick the reamer in the barrel.

The 20-222 has Lapua brass that is reasonably priced and available. There are never any problems with feeding or extraction unlike the 221. If you're running it as a single shot it's less of a concern.

More than safe. That is what the majority of the 20 VT shooters go with, a 1.11 twist and a 3 groove barrel. Shoots 39-40 grain Sierra BK's super good.
The Vmax would do just fine.

Dies, brass (221FB or even some make 20 VT brass and often sell it on sites) but 221 FB ran into a 20VT FL die reduces it right down. Dies are made by some of the major die makers and you even see them for sale on classified, here and there.
The 20VT is a sweet shooter, barrels don't heat up fast and you can shoot plenty before you set it aside to cool and it is very accurate all the way out to 400 yrds. You would enjoy one in your hands.

Thanks for all the insight. Looks like the dies and brass in the classified are sold. Action should be here next month so I will grab an 11" twist barrel and start looking for reloading components. Thanks again.

Keep watch or even put a Want to buy in classified, a set will show up and a good price or check some dealers i.e. Hornady, RCBS, Whiddens for some. Place will depend on what you want to spend for a set. Whiddens are some of the best.
