Right. So even if you had an advanced cool propellant, moly coated bullets, and a fancy chrome hammer forged barrel, it would still be the rate of fire which could cause problems?

I've seen some bad things happen with Nitride barrels, that being said only SS not Chrome moly.
If I was gonna do nitride it would be chrome moly and after it had about 15 rounds down making sure and very fine tooling marks are gone in the throat from the reamer.
Once its nitrided whatever in the barrel before will be after.

My first choice would be the new 400 steel that Bartlein is using now I gotta believe other manufacturers will start soon also.
I dont think Bartlein is making 20 cals unfortunately.

I am shooting a 20 Dasher with 55gr Bergers, and it's a Bartlein gain twist barrel. It is very accurate but as others said I don't expect much life out of it. I only shoot it maybe once a year though so it'll last me forever. I would like to try some heavier bullets but given how little I shoot anymore I am satisfied where it is now.

Bartlien doesn't list 20 cals on there website, maybe worth a call though.

i have a 20 br in a rem 700 titanium , shot in the .3 with 32 and 40's first couple loads. i never heat the barrel up as i use a timer and wait 3 min between shots. rifle is 20 years old and has less than 50 rounds thru it. 40 rounds load work up and 10 coyotes which is what it was built for.
had several pairs of coyotes called in and would shoot one and the other would head for the next county. i would start barking like a dog or hit the old coyote in distress sound. they would stop at 350 to 400 yards, the 20 br would reach out and do it's job.

I figure the 20BR (right at 1,600 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle) is normally good for 900-1,000 rds of barrel life...although my last one went 1,500 rds (go figure). The 20 PPC is about 1,800-2,000 rds. 20BR I shoot the Berger 55 gr, and the 20PPC either the 39gr Sierra or the 40gr V-Max. 9-twist barrels on the 20 BR's and 11-twist on the 20 PPC. Mine have only been Kreiger or Bartlein barrels. I clean the barrels every 30-35 rds. I try not to get them too hot...but sometimes that's a problem when the squirrel shooting is hot and heavy...Lol! After a number of years of using these large case capacity 20's, I'd stay with the 20PPC. One can make 700 yds on PD's with the 20BR and 600yds with the 20PPC. I've had a number of PD kills now with my 20-22/250 (55 gr Berger) at over a 1,000 yds, but the barrel shows a lot of wear with less than 450 rds through it. I'm going down...not up...Lol! Just my opinion. 410gauge
that's exactly why i have a 20 vartarg and a 20 tactical. if they are beyond 400 yards god intended for them to live and multiply.
