Neck Turning for .17 Caliber Cartridges
What is the best/preferred way to turn necks for .17 caliber cartridge during the case forming process?
I have read threads with discussions of doing the neck turning: 1) While at the .20 caliber stage of case forming (before necking down to .17) 2 After completely forming the .17 caliber cartridge. Assuming the use of the appropriate size neck expander mandrel (.17 or .20) is used to create uniform neck ID and push outward any neck wall irregularities, which neck turning technique is best? If possible please give detail as to why you have chosen one way or the other. Thanks! |

I would do it after its completely formed if you dont it will be thicker the next time you neck it down. Unless of course you dont mind doing it in 2 steps.

Agree, best to do it when completely formed, then the neck thickness is the last thing you check and trim down, if needed.
